When do you use the preposition to and when do you use for? FOR is used to express doing something on someone’s behalf. TO expresses direction.

Examples:

FOR

I hurt my hand and cannot carry my books myself, can you carry them for me?
I also can’t use my hand to write. Can you write a letter for me, so I can send it to my mother?

TO

I am up on the ladder painting and I forgot the turpentine, but I don’t want to come down to get it. Can you carry the turpentine to me?

Could you send the letter you wrote for me to my mother? Or should I send it to her when I finish painting?

    A diferença entre to e for é que o to é usado com o sentido de para (destino) e o for é usado como o por (fazendo um favor, etc):

    Escreva uma carta para minha mãe (Write a letter to my mother)
    Escreva uma carta para minha mãe por mim (Write a letter for me to my mother)

    Olá amigos, alguem pode me explicar oq significa “A.D.” ? Pelo que sei seria como “Depois de Cristo” porém não sei a tradução literal.
    Exemplo: “6th century A.D.”

    Thank you Fabio for your translation. Para and por create the same kind of difficulties for Portuguese as a Second Language learners.

    Fabio was explaining this for me (in my place, instead of me) because people didn`t understand the explanation. Fabio was explaining to English language learners for me.
