Hello denilson.
Tenho 15 anos e fiz quatro anos e meio de ingles e terminei meu curso no meio do ano, foi muito bom pra mim e eu aprendi muita e muitas coisas, porem sei que tenho que aprender muito mais, e além de ter feito o curso a muito tempo eu venho estudando pela internet, ou seja, como eu quero aprender mais para minha carreira profissional no futuro eu procuro conversar com pessoas de outros paises que falam ingles e tambem eu fasso varios tests pela internet.
E como eu sou muito fussona na internet estes dias eu escrevi “english”no google e o seu site foi o primeiro que apareceu e eu estou gostando muito porque apesar de eu ter feito alguns anos de ingles eu ainda nao sei tudo (logico) e esqueci muita coisa, entao o seu site esta sendo muito bom pra mim e esta me ajudando muito a relembrar e aprender many things!!

Tantas dúvidas a respeito da “mutabilidade” das palavras vem incapacidade de compreender que o Inglês (assim como o português, o chinês, o mali e qualquer outro idioma!) é um mecanismo vivo e dinâmico. quantas vezes usamos uma palavra em nosso idioma por simples associação e criamos uma nova espressão idiomática?
As línguas moldam-se a adaptam-se às necessidades de seus usuários e, uma vez estabelecida a comunicação, cumpriram seu papel primordial que é promover a interação social.
Parabéns pela coluna, e muito obrigada por esclarecer dados como estes que só alguém com muita interação social em inglês é capaz de discernir!
Estou ansiosa pelo próximo “Ampliando o vocabulário!

Hey Denilson, thank you for the prompt answer. I want you to know that I did like your book. It helped me to internalize heaps of good concepts. I figure I sounded a bit supercilious on my previous coment…
The point is, as “I take a real committment on my study” (I read that in your book), since one day I intend to cross over from being a student to being an English teacher, I have an array of different materials and cannot help myself purchasing more.
You are 100% right when you say the majority of the EFL students in Brazil never leave the intermediate level . I was naive by assuming you guys would focus on the advanced level. Thanks for the message! Thanks also for reading my book and saying a few words about it.

Well, the first thing I have to say is that “Inglês na Ponta da Língua” is a book addressed to students of English in any level. The main idea behind the book and its major conception is focused on giving tips and helping students to learn to learn English. As a consequence, the examples had to be basic and intermediate. Otherwise, the book would be too complicated for those students; and, as we both know, in Brazil the majority of English Language Students never leave the intermediate level.

The second thing I have to say is that the very same book is a leading guide to students – if they grasp the idea, they’l know how they can learn English better and reach an advanced level.

Thirdly, I have lots of advanced materials (books and texts). I’m working on a book addressed to these students. However, I have to be careful because the public is not higher and any publisher might be interested in it.

What I propose is that you keep visiting English Experts and my Blog (www.denilsodelima.blogspot.com) and tell us what exactly you’d like to have. In other words, what kind of topics and tips you consider to be advanced and much more appropriate to someone who has reached your level of proficiency.

I’ve just finished studying your book, “English on the tip of the tonge”. Although I found it very a comprehensive and useful tool, I have to say its content is very basic, more geared to basic and intermediate students. Wouldn’t you happen to have more advanced materials?

Olá Gabriela,

Bem, aqui no Brasil nós podemos dizer:

“Fui multado por dirigir em alta velocidade”
“Ganhei uma multa por andar em alta velocidade”
“Recebi uma multa por dirigir rápido demais”
“Me multaram por dirigir em alta velocidade”

Enfim, há mais de um jeito de dizer a mesma coisa. Logo, em inglês isto há também vários outros modos de dizer a mesma coisa:

“I got a fine for driving too fast”
“I was fined for driving too fast”
“I was booked for speeding”
“I got a fine for speeding”
“I was given a fine for speeding”
“The police officer gave me a fine for driving too fast”

No artigo eu sugeri “I was booked for speeding” apenas para mostrar um dos possíveis usos da palavra “book”. Neste caso, ele significa “ser multado”.

O objetivo foi apenas o de mostrar a todos os leitores do English Experts que as palavras em inglês – assim como em português – podem – e terão – outros significados e usos. Por isto o título: “Ampliando o Vocabulário”. Na verdade o título deveria ser “Ampliando o Conhecimento do Uso das Palavras”; porém, é longo demais. O objetivo não é analisar a quantidade de expressões que podem ser usadas para exprimir a mesma idéia.

Olá Mary,

Curioso como uma língua usada amplamente em todas as partes do mundo pode causar certas confusões. Diante de seu comentário tive de voltar aos dicionários para verificar o que houve.

De acordo com todos os dicionários que pesquisei encontrei o seguinte:

“when a police officer books someone, they write down their name, address, etc because they have done something wrong”

E o exemplo mais freqüente é algo como “She was booked for speeding”.

Decidi pesquisar então em dois Corpus da Língua Inglesa (BNC – British National Corpus e o ANC – American National Corpus). Em ambos é possível encontrar a sentença “I was booked for speeding” sendo usadas nas duas variantes da língua inglesa.

Para aqueles que não tenham acesso a um Corpus oficial pode tirar proveito do Google. Para isto basta digitar “I was booked for speeding” (com aspas e tudo mais) e você encontrará 544 ocorrências.

Conclusão, a expressão que coloquei no artigo provavelmente não seja muito usada em uma região ou outra. Porém, é possível! Pode soar estranha aos ouvidos de alguns; no entanto, ela existe e é usada normalmente por outros.

It idoes not sound correct to me to say “I was booked for driving too fast”.

I would say “I got a ticket for driving too fast.”

http://www.dictionary.com only lists “throw the book at someone” in relation to crimes, but it is my feeling that th throw the book at someone is to jail him for a serious crime.

Never having been to a police station to be booked, my experience is limited in the actual usage fo this word, rsrs, but even on tv in crime dramas they don`t say “I was booked for speeding.”

Being booked is not the equivalent of being written up for a citation (a traffic ticket” It is the equivalent of being put in jail.
