Hello, Mr. Ford!

I’ve perceived that Brazilian Languages Schools have made a mistake. This mistake is only to teach English in the American Dialect or only in the British Dialect. I am no teacher of English nor owner of Language School. But I know that. Brazilian students don’t learn English thinking about only in USA, or only in Britain. There are people who want to learn thinking in Canada, your homeland, and in Australia too. In Brazil, the good strategy is to teach the basic English first, and them to consider the customer’s need about the language. After basic level, the students would choose if they learn only American/Canadian English, or only British English, or only Australian English, or if they learn American/Canadian and British dialects, or American/Canadian and Australian dialects or British and Australian Dialects, or the stundent learns thinking about New Zealand, or other country, or if the student learns everything. I think the same thing about the Spanish Language teaching and French Language teaching. If a Brazilian student wants to learn English thinking about Canada, he maybe want to learn French thinking about only Canada, not France, for example.

É muito interessante ter contato com os dois tipos de inglês (americano e britânico).
Graças a Deus, eu tive a felicidade de aprender, no curso de inglês, o inglês americano, cheguie a concluir o curso e tudo, logo em seguida, passei no vestibular para Letras c/ Inglês e lá, tive uma professora britânica, de Brighton (algo do tipo), assim pude desenvolver meu listening também para o inglês britânico.
Hoje, tenho menos dificuldade para conversar (oralmente) com alguns contatos no MSN/Skype.

Hi everybody!
Here you are some more tips regarding the differences in pronunciation between British English and American English. These differences I’ve learned in practise.
We’ll start by the sound of the letter “R”:
O “R” dos Britânicos é mais suave em comparação ao dos Americanos, que é mais carregado. Exemplo: Car : Cáa(BrE) Cárr(AmE).
Year: Íâ(BrE) Íârr(AmE). And so on…
O som do “T” ou “TT” dos Britânicos é mais forte e mais bem pronunciado do que o dos Americanos que na maioria das vezes soa como um “R” como na palavra “para”. Exemplo:
Water: Uótâ(BrE) Uórârr(AmE). Little: Litâl(BrE) Lirâl(AmE). And so on…
Outra característica marcante da pronúncia Britânica é o som das palavras terminadas com o som “ór” como em: More, for, door, course entre outras. O som do “O” tende ser fechado como “Ô”. Exemplo: More: Mô(BrE) Mórr(AmE). Course: Côss(BrE) Córss(AmE). And so on…
Mais outra característica que marca a pronúncia Britânica é o som das palavras com “É” como em: Dance, Can, Band, Glass, To pass entre outras.
Para os Britânicos o som fica mais parecido com um “A”. Exemplo: Dance: Dâns(BrE) Déns(AmE). Glass: Gláss(BrE) Gléss(AmE).

Existem várias diferenças no que diz respeito a estes dois sotaques, mas ficará para uma próxima vez. Duty calls me!

I was about to say What Cadú said. We might have studied English together back then. I have become an English Teacher myself and I would like to add that at the language school where I work (not sure I can say which one, for ethical reasons), we try to empasize differences in spelling, vocabulary, pronunciation and even grammar between British and American English, as we do not know which of the “Englishes” our students might face in their lives.
The material addopted is sometimes from American publishing houses, sometimes from British ones, but we are told to talk about these differences in class whenever possible to raise students’ awareness of them.

Hi Celia! Any kind of self study is great! You can go far with it if you have the discipline!

That’s fabulous that you want to immigrate to Canada! All the power to you! English in Canada follows British spelling and a mix of American and British grammar.

As of late the word on the street is that British English is gaining importance. Please note for example that the Canadian government requires that potential immigrants do the IELTS exam. This test is a British test! So I rest my case!
Nevertheless, I still teach British and American English side by side as you can see in my videos.

I study at Cultura Inglesa. There I learn both American and British English.
I prefer the British pronounce, but I think I speak like American because I just talking a little English when I started learning it.

Nossaaa! Muito bom mesmo, eu nunca parei muito para procurar vídeos como esse que explicam diferenças entre inglês americano e britânico! Eu gosto muito do sotaque britânico, mas ainda acho difícil entender o que eles falam algumas vezes, principalmente algumas pessoas mais “enroladas”.
