Regarding the native speakers, they are no able sometimes to understand what we, Brazilians, are able to understand (yes, in English). As an example, I have once had a British English teacher who was not able to understand some English lyrics and I could not believe my ears when he said that to me.

But then, I realized that sometime in the past, I had the same kind of difficulties in understanding some Djavan’s beautiful songs even in my native Portuguese language. So, the bottom line is, even native speakers are not a guarantee that everything is going to be understood in a language.

I have any problems in being corrected. But listen, if I believe in something, you really have to prove me you’re right (or I’m wrong). Once I realize I’m wrong, that’s great, this means that I have learnt another lesson. That’s the way I see things in life.

Don’t think I’m not going to give so easily. :o)

Com todo o respeito, o ser humano é falível, inclusive o Justus. Acho realmente que o inglês dele é ótimo, mas daí a acreditar que ele não possa cometer erros, há uma distância muito grande.

Please, watch the video again and notice that in the beginning of it, the girl says ‘advertisement’, and then, Justus put some pressure on her and from this point on, she is not so sure any longer, that´s when he says ´advertising’ and she (under pressure I would do the same) repeats what he just said and also says ‘ avertising’.
Please tell me I’m not getting crazy!

Thank you very much for your comment and I apologize if I didn’t make myself clear.

But it seems that our point of disagreement is what the girl says.

After reading your message, I went back to check the video out again and once more, I heard the same thing: she says “advertisement” and Mr. Justus (in my opinion) says “advertising”.

From a fluency point of view, I wouldn’t say that using one or other that it’s right or wrong. When you are in the middle of a speech, it’s kind of difficult to choose between the two options. On the other hand, if you are writing something, then you have the time to check all the possibilities out.

Please, check it again and tell me what you heard, would you? Maybe I am in need of improving my listening.

And we are all students, once we learn something new every day, no matter how old we are.

When a gerund is used like a noun but there is a noun with the same meaning, we should use the noun, instead of the gerund.

If you use an –ing form like a noun, this is called gerund.
Example: I like studying and fishing.
Smoking can destroy your lungs.

Regarding the video, I think Justus made a mistake when he thought he was correcting the female participant. She used correctly the word “advertisement” (remember: there is a noun) and the big boss said that the correct word was “advertising” (a gerund).

Nós que estamos aprendendo inglês, estamos em vantagem sobre os que apenas estão limitados ao seu próprio idioma.

É muito bonito, você tentar se comunicar em uma lingua estrangeira, mesmo que seja aos trancos e barrancos. Mais claro, sempre procurando melhorar.

Não se aprende a andar de bicicleta com medo de cair. O importante é transmitir a mensagem, pois os errinhos com o tempo serão consertados.

Sempre que aparece a chance no meu trabalho de falar inglês por telefone, ou pessoalmente com um estrangeiro, ou enviar ou responder um e-mail em inglês eu sigo em frente. Pois são oportunidades raras como essa de melhorar meu inglês que não posso deixar passar. Claro, estou ciente que erro, mais sempre procuro me corrigir e sempre consigo dizer o que quero dizer.
