Verbos em inglês que confundem

Hey there! Meus alunos sempre reclamam que “inglês tem um monte de palavra pra uma coisa só”, “como vou saber quando usar ou quando usar outro” e outras coisas do tipo. Juntei alguns verbos que apresentam dificuldades para eles e certamente vocês aproveitarão também.

FINISH e END

FINISH – terminar (algo que terminamos ou acabamos).
Ex. The students finished the test in less than one hour. / I think I´ll finish this book before the weekend.

END – acabar (algo que termina ou acaba por si só).
Ex. What time does the movie end?

DISCUSS e ARGUE

DISCUSS – discutir, debater, trocar idéias.
Ex. Let´s discuss this later. / The directors will discuss this matter now.

ARGUE – discutir, “bater boca”.
Ex. They have such different opinions on politics so they always end up arguing. (O substantivo é argument.)

LIE, LIE e LAY

LIE (lied, lied) – mentir.
Ex. Don´t you ever lie to me again!

LIE (lay, lain) – deitar, estar deitado, jazer.
Ex. If you´re tired, you can lie down for a while. / Tanzania lies in the southeast of Africa. /Jack was so tired he lay in bed all day.

LAY (laid, laid) – colocar, pôr.
Ex. Birds lay eggs. / John came in and laid his books on the sofa.
