oi, gostei muito. So gostaria de adicionar: to lose the one`s mind, no sentido de perder a cabeca, ficar furioso ou fazer algo idiota, ou fica maluco.
Exemplo: Frank lost his mind after his wife and kids were killed on a car crash.

Obrigada por todos os comentários. Realmente, creio que a grande maioria das expressões que conheço e uso são either standard or British English.

Oi Luciana,

Gostei muito desse artigo. São idioms de inglês bem úteis!

Eu só queria adicionar duas coisas.
Quando nós usamos "at a loss", normalmente falamos sobre o que estamos at a loss. Por exemplo,
"When my husband told me he wanted a divorce I was at a loss for words.
Ou,
After Tim quit his job, he was really at a loss as to what to do with his life.
E, como americana, eu usaria "lose face" mais no sentido de perder respeito. Por exemplo, The manager lost face with his staff because he refused to admit he was wrong.

Good luck at English Experts!!

Very nice!
Welcome teacher!

Thank you so much!

Welcome, Luciana. A propos of losing...

One Art

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

---Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.
