Adjetivos em inglês com exemplos – Parte 2
This is my second article here at English Experts, and I want to take advantage of this opportunity to thank each one of you who so kindly responded to my first text. The number of comments and the uncountable friendly words you wrote encouraged me to face one more challenge and write this one.
Este é o meu segundo artigo aqui no English Experts e quero aproveitar esta oportunidade para agradecer a cada um de vocês, que tão gentilmente se pronunciaram em relação ao meu primeiro texto. O número de comentários e as incontáveis palavras amáveis que escreveram me incentivaram a encarar mais um desafio e escrever este.
This time I’ve decided to leave out the adjective-preposition combinations which are similar to their counterparts in Portuguese, unless they accept different prepositions with different meanings. Thus, we can better focus on those that really call for our attention due to the different prepositions they are followed by.
Desta vez decidi omitir as combinações de adjetivo+preposição que são semelhantes às suas equivalentes em português, a menos que aceitem diferentes preposições com diferentes significados. Assim, podemos concentrar-nos melhor naquelas que realmente exigem nossa atenção devido às diferentes preposições por que elas são seguidas.
Another novelty in this article is the sentences I’m asking you to complete at the end of the list. We all know that we learn better when we practice the recently-studied topics. So, feel free to write the prepositions that complete them appropriately. By the end of this week I’ll come back here to give you the correct answers so you can check yours. (Try not to look at the text when completing the sentences.) Have a nice time!
Outra novidade neste artigo são as frases que estou pedindo que vocês completem no final da lista. Todos sabemos que aprendemos melhor quando praticamos os itens recém-estudados. Então, sintam-se livres para escrever as preposições que as completam adequadamente. Até o final desta semana voltarei aqui para dar-lhes as respostas certas para que vocês possam conferir a suas. (Tentem não olhar o texto ao completar as frases.) Divirtam-se!
responsible for: responsável por. Ex.: I’m responsible for three departments in the company.
responsible to: ser subordinado a (alguém superior). Ex.: She’s responsible to the personnel manager.
scared of: com muito medo de. Ex.: I’m really scared of dogs.
scared to (+ verb): com muito medo de. Ex.: Jeff was scared to talk in front of the group.
suitable for: adequado para. Ex.: Do you think the apartment is suitable for a 5-person family?
suitable to (+ verb): adequado para. Ex.: This dictionary is not suitable to use in class.
terrified of: ter pavor de. Ex.: I’m terrified of dark places.
terrified to (+ verb): ter pavor de. Ex.: They’re terrified to be in the dark.
upset with (somebody): aborrecido com. Ex.: Are you still upset with Amanda?
upset at/about/by (something): aborrecido com. Ex.: I was really upset about the test results.
useful to: útil para. Ex.: This list may be useful to Brazilians. / That magazine is useful to learn about politics.
useful for (+ gerund): útil para. Ex.: That magazine is useful for learning about politics.
worried about: preocupado com. Ex.: I’m really worried about the exams.

Henry, I feel that in English the verb “be” must agree with the subject – in this case singular -, but in Portuguese the verb “ser” should agree with the predicative (in this case). Subject-verb agreement is a very tough area of study, especially in Portuguese. But that’s my answer to your question. Another example: “What calls my attention is her eyes.” (O que chama minha atenção são seus olhos.” No always do two languages agree when it comes to subject-verb agreement.
Gabriela, I’ve checked in two famous dictionaries and neither of them gives the preposition “about” as a possible companion for “scared”.
I should reinforce that when writing/talking about such a topic, it is virtually impossible to deal with all the possibilities. I’ve tried to mention the most usual ones.

Sorry, Gabriela, I missed your question. But here goes my answer: No, it’s not wrong to say “I’m scared of traveling.” You can say “scared of + noun” (e.g. scared of dogs), “scared of + gerund” (e.g. scared of flying), and “scared to + infinitive” (e.g. scared to fly).
Sorry, folks, I’d like to correct aword in one of my sentences above: “NOT always do two languages agree when it comes to subject-verb agreement.”
