Em meu primeiro artigo, quero falar um pouco do Modal Verb “Shall”. Esta palavra geralmente causa confusão de como e onde deve ser empregada.
Você às vezes não a confunde com o “will”? A diferença entre “shall” e “will” se torna ainda mais confusa, quando frequentemente usamos a forma contraída ao falar “ll” como I will go – I’ll go or I shall go – I’ll go.
Se você não confunde, que bom (ufa!), mas muitas pessoas sim! Confira a dica abaixo.
Shall (modal verb)
Meaning 1: In old-fashioned or very formal English, we use ‘shall’ instead of ‘will’ when the subject is ‘I’ or ‘we’. Most people use ‘will’ these days.
(Um pouco antiquada e muito formal, usamos ‘shall’ ao invés de ‘will’, quando o sujeito da oração for ‘I’ ou ‘we’. Muitas pessoas usam ‘will’ ultimamente).
Examples:
- I shall spend all day tomorrow studying English.
- I shall never forget this beautiful day.
- We shall contact you in the near future. (very formal)
Meaning 2: We use ‘shall’, with ‘I’ or ‘we’, when we make a suggestion.
(Usamos ‘shall”, com ‘I’ ou ‘we’ quando damos alguma sugestão).
Examples:
- “I’m too hot.” “Shall I turn on the air conditioning?”
- Shall we go to the beach tomorrow?
Meaning 3: We use ‘shall’ to say that something certainly will or must happen, or that you are determined that something will happen. After ‘I’ or ‘We’ with this meaning, we always emphasise the word ‘shall’.
(Usamos ‘shall” para dizer que alguma coisa certamente vai ou deve acontecer, ou que você está determinado(a) que algo vai acontecer. Depois de ‘I’ ou ‘We’ com este significado, sempre enfatizamos a palavra ‘shall’).
Examples:
- I shall be there to help you, so please don’t worry about it.
- The company rules state that no employee shall smoke on the company premises.
This week’s old English proverb:
Gardens are not made by sitting in the shade.
Meaning: Nothing is achieved without effort. (Você já pensou nisso ???)

Welcome abord, Luciana! Thanks for the nice article on will vs. shall! I visited your site, and it looks very iteresting. I especially liked the piece about ride, lift, and carona. We use lift and ride interchangeably in theUS. Example: “Can I give you a lift?” or “Thanks for the ride.”

“We use ‘shall’ to say that something certainly will or must happen, or that you are determined that something will happen. ”
This section refers to the example that you site.
* The company rules state that no employee shall smoke on the company premises.

Oi, eu quero saber se vc conhece o curso de ingles pimsleur? Então, eu tenho o modulo 1 e gostaria de saber se existe o os outros dois modulos 2 e 3 . Obrigada pela atenção.
Uma pequena anotação sobre o primeiro parágrafo do artigo, caso tenha causado uma certa dúvida. A contração “I’ll” vem da língua oral (causada por duas vogais em sucessão), e se relaciona somente com “I will”. Realmente não acredito que “I shall” se contraia no falar ou no escrito. (E tb não creio ter sido a intenção da Luciana de dizer isso.)
Quem quizer entrar ainda mais na discussão dos usos correntes de “shall and will” pode se interessar pela discussão no “freeonline dictionary”, especialmente a parte entitulada “Current Usage”.

I never heard of the course Pimsleur so I can’t help you nor comment on how good it is or not.
Just looked at the website – “Start speaking any language within 10 days or receive a full and courteous refund”.
Umm…if you learn to say “My name is….” Does that count as a start?
I don’t believe you can learn a language in a short period of time. Regardless of the method you use, it takes 3 main things to learn a language – it takes 1) Practice, then 2) Practice and at the end more 3) Practice.
Practice takes time….
