Olá Pessoal! Voltamos a falar de verbos frasais, que são indispensáveis para uma boa fluência. Este assunto, quando bem dominado, pode dar um toque especial ao seu inglês.
Confira abaixo algumas frases sobre o tema:
1. Take something apart: Desmontar
Ex: We’d let him take his toys apart and put them back together. (Nós deixávamos ele desmontar e montar os brinquedos.)
2. Come off: Dar certo
Ex: The game plan came off well. (O esquema de jogo deu certo.)
3. Cook something up: Inventar algo desonesto, mirabolante.
Ex: The boy cooked up a funny story that day. (O menino inventou um história engraçada naquele dia.)
4. Crack down on something: Tomar medidas severas, ser mais rigoroso
Ex: They intend to crack down on software piracy. (Eles pretendem tomar medidas enérgicas contra a pirataria.)
5. Die down: Diminuir até acabar
Ex: The hype will die down soon, don´t worry. (A empolgação nos comentários vai passar logo,não se preocupe.)
6. Do away with something: Acabar com
Ex: They said it will do away with the red tape. (Eles disseram que isto vai acabar com a burocracia.)
7. Draw something out: Retirar algo
Ex: Did she draw money out of her account? (Ela retirou dinheiro da conta dela?)
8. Drink up: Beber tudo
Ex: Drink your milk up before you go. (Beba todo seu leite antes de ir.)
Ex: Did you drink it up? (Você bebeu tudo?)
9. Give away: Dar, doar algo a alguém
Ex: She gave away her books to the boy. (Ele deu os livros para um garoto.)
10. Fall out: Cair(cabelo, etc)
Ex: Hair falls out during chemotherapy. (O cabelo cai durante a químioterapia.)
11. Hand over: Entregar
Ex: He handed over the capitain’s armband after the draw. (Ele entregou a faixa de capitão depois do empate.)
12. Palm something away: Espalmar algo
Ex: The keeper palmed the ball away easily. (O goleiro espalmou a bola com facilidade.)
13. Liven something up: Animar algo
Ex: The goal really livened up the game.(O gol realmente animou o jogo.)

Miss Nicegirl always thought her engagement to Mr. Idiot would come off. But some weeks ago she noticed he had been cooking up some lies and, after some investigation, her heart was taken apart. She knew she needed to crack down on the situation, but she was feeling so torn and lost that she couldn’t take any decision. All she wanted was (to) draw the feeling of rejection out of her heart. Family and friends did their best to convince her to do away with the idea she had been guilty about what happened. In one of her crises she even said: I wish I drank alcohol, then I would drink up everything I could just to forget this!”
After some time she decided to give away Mr. Idiot’s letters and photos to his mother, handed over some of the gifts he had given her to a charity place and now is hoping her memories about him will soon die down; while she’s striving to liven her live up.

Yes, I did notice the tiny little word in parentheses — and I couldn’t avoid letting out a little smile — because I remembered the whole fuss about it. LOL.
Just two little things: a) is it okay to say “take a decision”? (I was thinking of the verb “make”); b) the ending of the text should read “liven her LIFE up, right?

Regarding the “take a decision”, I’ve just researched about it and yes, “make a decision” is the “rightest” one, though some defend “take…” is also correct (very often used in BrE). Some also say – and I found that very plausible – that this was influenced by Spanish speakers. http://www.betterwritingskills.com/articles/take-decisions.txt
Anyway, Longman told me “take a decision” has a wider meaning than “make…”:
take a decision = “make an important decision, especially after considering carefully”. Miss Nicegirl might have done that, don’t you think?
