Hoje falaremos de seis palavras que podem derrubar você num teste de língua inglesa, são elas: relationship, relation, relative, relations, education e upbringing. Confira abaixo as particularidades de cada uma:
Relationship
Use relationship (relação, relacionamento, parentesco) para descrever:
1 – o modo como as pessoas se relacionam com amigos, colegas, familiares:
He has a very good relationship with his boss. (Ele tem um relacionamento muito bom com seu chefe.)
The police have a good relationship with the community. (A polícia tem uma boa relação com a comunidade.)
2 – parentesco, a conexão familiar entre duas pessoas:
What’s his relationship to you? He is my uncle. (Qual é o parentesco dele com você? Ele é meu tio.)
Relation
Relation ou relative significam “parente, parenta”:
He is a distant relation. (Ele é um parente distante.)
He’s no relation. (Ele não é meu parente.)
Is she any relation to you? (Ela é sua parenta? )
A party for friends and relatives. (Uma festa para amigos e parentes.)
Relations
Use relations (sempre no plural) para descrever o modo como dois grupos de pessoas, países, etc. se relacionam um com o outro:
Public relations (Relações públicas)
International relations (Relações internacionais)
Diplomatic relations (Relações diplomáticas)
Relations between Brazil and Argentina have improved. (As relações entre o Brasil e a Argentina melhoraram)
Education
Use education para descrever o que alguém aprende na escola, faculdade, etc.
The Department of Education (O Ministério da Educação)
A man of little education (Um homem de pouca instrução)
Upbringing
Use upbringing para descrever aquilo que você aprende de seus pais e familiares a respeito de como se comportar.
I came from a Catholic family and had a strict, religious upbringing. (Vim de uma família católica e tive uma estrita educação religiosa.)

No Google acharão 24 mil referências a “the relationship between the UK and the European Community”. Como já disse, o significado de “relationship” é bem mais amplo do que aquele sugerido pela regra acima.
