Frederico, I think you’ll find that ‘cheesy’ is NEVER used to mean ‘elegante’ or ‘chique’ in ANY English-speaking country today, but don’t take my word for it. You can probably confirm this yourself by taking a sample from Google or a corpus (BNC for example) and looking at the specific contexts of use. Although I have written four dictionaries in the Michaelis line, I am not part of the team that does the Michaelis Eng-Port/Port-Eng dictionary, which is clearly wrong in this case.
I can see perhaps how this confusion might have come up. The origins of the modern slang “cheesy” come from the 19th century, when the word did mean ‘elegant’. It most certainly is not used today with this meaning. A remnant of this old meaning can be found in the slang ‘big cheese’ for an important or powerful person.
I hope I’ve cleared that up for you.
