At its most basic level, informal English is the day to day spoken language, and formal English is the written form especially in business and academic settings or when a formal letter is required.

In informal spoken English many of the rules of grammar are relaxed, and some are even ignored, which makes learning the language even more confusing to students, especially adults. While in formal English the rules of grammar should be rigidly abided by in most cases.

So, what does all this mean? If speaking to a friend of about the same age and social status as you, then informal English is perfectly acceptable, but if speaking to a person who is older, or who is in a much higher social standing than you are, you should use a more formal spoken English. Some examples are:

• To a friend it is acceptable to say, “Hey Jack, how’re you doing buddy?”
• To a Governor you would say, “Good afternoon Governor, how are you doing today?”
• To your girlfriend, “Do you want to grab a bite to eat? I need to ask you something.”
• To your girlfriend’s father, “Mr. Jones, would you care to have dinner with me tonight? I would like to talk to you about your daughter, and myself.”
• To a coworker, “ Morning Joe.”
• To your boss or a client, “ Good morning, Mr. Smith or Good morning, sir.”
• To a friend, “Man! Was that movie really cool or what, we need to see it again!”
• To your drama professor, “Professor Bogart, the motion picture which you assigned us to watch was one of the most impressive that I have ever seen. In fact, I am going to view it again tonight!

Always use formal English when writing; a business letter, an essay, or other papers for work, school or publication.

You can use informal English when writing a letter to a close friend or a relative, when quoting informal usage, or in a novel or script, etc. Otherwise it is much less risky to use the formal form, especially if you have any doubts about the acceptability of the informal form, or if you need to be very clear or specific. Remember that you will never look or sound foolish by using proper grammar.

Seguem abaixo alguns benefícios de ler um livro em inglês:

1. O nosso vocabulário se expande de diferentes maneiras, dependo do tipo de linguagem utilizada pelo autor;
2. Com alguns tipos de livros, podemos aprender sobre alguma cultura, tradição de um povo e de um país;

Tudo isso é muito bom mas tem um porém: é ainda difícil a aquisição de um livro totalmente em inglês no Brasil. Por esse motivo, indico o site Librivox, que disponibiliza livros em podcast, divididos por capítulos e readers (as pessoas que lêem os livros para você).

É um site bastante interessante e promissor. Você ainda pode ser um voluntário oferecendo sua voz ao site e aos usuários, o que vai aprimorar tudo que você aprendeu lendo um livro em inglês, através do inglês falado.

O CORVO

Numa meia-noite agreste, quando eu lia, lento e triste,
Vagos, curiosos tomos de ciências ancestrais,
E já quase adormecia, ouvi o que parecia
O som de algúem que batia levemente a meus umbrais.
“Uma visita”, eu me disse, “está batendo a meus umbrais.
É só isto, e nada mais.”

Ah, que bem disso me lembro! Era no frio dezembro,
E o fogo, morrendo negro, urdia sombras desiguais.
Como eu qu’ria a madrugada, toda a noite aos livros dada
P’ra esquecer (em vão!) a amada, hoje entre hostes celestiais -
Essa cujo nome sabem as hostes celestiais,
Mas sem nome aqui jamais!

Como, a tremer frio e frouxo, cada reposteiro roxo
Me incutia, urdia estranhos terrores nunca antes tais!
Mas, a mim mesmo infundido força, eu ia repetindo,
“É uma visita pedindo entrada aqui em meus umbrais;
Uma visita tardia pede entrada em meus umbrais.
É só isto, e nada mais”.

E, mais forte num instante, já nem tardo ou hesitante,
“Senhor”, eu disse, “ou senhora, decerto me desculpais;
Mas eu ia adormecendo, quando viestes batendo,
Tão levemente batendo, batendo por meus umbrais,
Que mal ouvi…” E abri largos, franqueando-os, meus umbrais.
Noite, noite e nada mais.

A treva enorme fitando, fiquei perdido receando,
Dúbio e tais sonhos sonhando que os ninguém sonhou iguais.

Entrou grave e nobre um corvo dos bons tempos ancestrais.
Não fez nenhum cumprimento, não parou nem um momento,
Mas com ar solene e lento pousou sobre os meus umbrais,
Num alvo busto de Atena que há por sobre meus umbrais,

E esta ave estranha e escura fez sorrir minha amargura

“Tens o aspecto tosquiado”, disse eu, “mas de nobre e ousado,

Pasmei de ouvir este raro pássaro falar tão claro,
Inda que pouco sentido tivessem palavras tais.
Mas deve ser concedido que ninguém terá havido
Que uma ave tenha tido pousada nos meus umbrais,
Ave ou bicho sobre o busto que há por sobre seus umbrais,
Com o nome “Nunca mais”.

Mas o corvo, sobre o busto, nada mais dissera, augusto,

A alma súbito movida por frase tão bem cabida,
“Por certo”, disse eu, “são estas vozes usuais,
Aprendeu-as de algum dono, que a desgraça e o abandono
Seguiram até que o entono da alma se quebrou em ais,
E o bordão de desesp’rança de seu canto cheio de ais
Era este “Nunca mais”.

Mas, fazendo inda a ave escura sorrir a minha amargura,
Sentei-me defronte dela, do alvo busto e meus umbrais;
E, enterrado na cadeira, pensei de muita maneira
Que qu’ria esta ave agoureia dos maus tempos ancestrais,

Comigo isto discorrendo, mas nem sílaba dizendo

Im my last post, I promised a surprise in this final installment of “The Raven”. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

Only this, and nothing more.’

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; – vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow – sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels called Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me – filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
`’Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door -

This it is, and nothing more,’

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,’ said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you’ – here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!’
And I whispered back, and an echo murmured back, `Lenore!’
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping something louder than before.
`Surely,’ said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then thereat is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
‘Tis the wind and nothing more!’

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.

But the raven, sitting lonely on his placid bust, spoke only,

Hi, this is Jason Bermingham on English Experts. For those of you who are just joining us, this series of posts features the poem “The Raven” by American author Edgar Allan Poe. Poe lived from 1809 to 1849 and is now considered one of America’s greatest writers. Among his many accomplishments, he is credited for inventing the detective-fiction genre, which was later made famous by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. Today we are going to read and hear stanzas 7, 8, and 9 of “The Raven”. If you haven’t read part 1 and part 2 of this series, please click on the links and have a listen before completing today’s exercise.

But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door -
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
`Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,’ I said, `art sure no craven.
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore -
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!’
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.’

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning – little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door -
Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as `Nevermore.’

That is great writing, isn’t it? Makes me want to put away my pen forever! How can we ever compete with that?

I will read stanzas 3, 4, and 5 – first without stopping and then with pauses for you to repeat after me. Hi, this is Jason Bermingham on English Experts. For the past few weeks we have been training our English pronunciation with tongue-twisters. These are texts that often challenge English speakers with hard-to-say combinations of words that have little meaning.

Now we progress to the next level, moving from tongue-twisters to poetry. I am going to start reciting famous English-language poems, giving English Experts users an opportunity to follow along and improve your pronunciation as well as your literary knowledge. In the spirit of Halloween, our first poem will be “The Raven” by one of my favorite writers: American author Edgar Allan Poe. “The Raven” is a dark tale and one of the most famous poems in history. It’s wonderful to listen to, with its unique rhythm.

I will read three stanzas a week, first without stopping and then allowing you time to repeat after each line. The tongue-twisters were just for fun and there was no need to understand meaning. Here, I challenge you to really understand what Poe has written. If you get stuck, use the chat feature of this blog to ask other readers what they think. If you all get stuck I will help out, though there are passages that are a challenge even for a native speaker who has studied English Literature in college. “The Raven” has become a classic and you can even find it featured in a Halloween episode of the The Simpsons. So learn it and read it out loud and your will have English difficulty nevermore.

Use voice-over techniques to improve your pronunciation

If somebody tells you to “stick a cork in it,” don’t take it as a compliment. The expression “stick a cork in it” is just another way of saying “shut up.” But there is one case in which sticking a cork in your mouth has its benefits. This technique can strengthen your communication skills by improving your articulation.

Author and voice-over actor James Alburger teaches a good way to improve articulation in his book The Art of Voice Acting, and variations of this technique have been around ever since the Greek orator Demosthenes put pebbles in his mouth to improve his own communication skills.

Here’s how it works: stick a cork between your front teeth as if it were a cigar. Don’t have a cork? Use your thumb. Now, read a passage of text out loud. Read slowly and pronounce ev-ery syl-la-ble. Really work your mouth. When you’re done, remove the cork and read the passage again. Do the words sound clearer and easier to understand?

Last night I was at a bar with my friend Mike and he told me that a girl was checking me out. I was kind of shy to go say hello because the last time I did this the girl thought I was coming on to her and she blew me off before I even had the chance to introduce myself. Mike said that he wasn´t surprised because I usually strike out after using my pick-up lines. But I guess that girl was just playing hard to get and that reminded me of Laura Smithson. A year ago some mutual friends fixed us up because they thought we would hit it off. Turns out she was on the rebound so I didn’t want to get involved. I tried to let her down easy but she got furious and threw a fit in front of the whole restaurant.

In it’s simplest meaning, the word ‘deal’ means ‘contrato’ or ‘acordo,’ a business agreement such as a contract, a closed negotiation or an arrangement. The popular TV show here in the US ‘Deal or No Deal’ is clearly a good example of this use.

“I think we agree on the terms, so do we have a deal?”
“Acho que concordamos nas condições, então está tudo certo?”

In law, it is common to refer to ‘plea bargains’ as ‘deals.’

“The jury will convict you, so you should take the deal.”

“O júri vai te condenar, então acho que você deve aceitar o acordo.”

Another use of ‘deal’ as a noun is in the context of playing a card game. The act of giving everyone their playing cards is called ‘the deal.’ This leads us into the world of ‘deal’ as a verb. Giving everyone their cards is handled by the ‘dealer’ whose job it is ‘to deal the cards.’ The image of playing cards being dealt is a strong and common metaphor in our society, the ‘hand one is dealt’ indicating personal fate and destiny.

“This is a difficult time, but it is the hand that I have been dealt.”

One of my favorites is ‘to deal’ meaning ‘aguentar’ or even ‘dar jeito.’ This is perhaps a shortened version of ‘to deal with…’ something, which means the same thing.

“Do you mind picking up the kids later?”

“It’ll be tough, but I’ll deal.”

“Você pode pegar as crianças mais tarde?”

“Vai me atrapalhar, mas dou jeito.”

A slang phrase that is common is “What’s the deal?” which roughly translates to “O quê que é?” Related to that is the phrase “So the deal is…” which approximates “A parada é o seguinte…”

Also, a minor note: ‘to deal’ is the verb we use to mean ‘distribute illegal drugs.’ So a ‘traficante’ would be a ‘dealer’ in English.

Let me give you a hand.

Helping, assisting someone with something, is a nice thing to do, and giving someone a hand means to help them.

“(Are you )In a jam?”

If you are in a jam, you require someone’s help to get out the

We can help someone out financially or try to get him out of a jam (a difficult or problematic situation).

“Help yourself!”

At a party the host may tell us to help ourselves (serve ourselves) to the buffet.

But help isn’t always meant in a positivie way.
The word help does not always mean to help someone (ajuda, assistir).

If someone says, “Get some help” in an unfriendly tone, they are implying that you need psychiatric help. It is an assertion that you are so imbalanced that you need to see a psychiatrist. Usually,they don’t really intend to objectively assess your actual mental state, but they are trying to insult you.

Speaking of not being crazy, the phrase “like crazy” does not refer to anyone’s mental state. The sentence,”The new software is selling like crazy,” means it is selling furiously, very much, fast.

Eu acabei de testar o serviço, ele é realmente muito interessante. Fiz o cadastro para ler o livro “A Arte da Guerra” (The Art of War) de Sun Tzu em 17 partes. Optei por receber os capítulos na Segunda, Quarta e Sexta às 7 horas da manhã por e-mail.

Experimente. O serviço é gratuito e pode ser uma ótima ferramenta para aprender Inglês, já que a maioria dos livros disponibilizados estão neste idioma. Recomendo para pessoas que estão no nível intermediário e avançado.

It is the following: You know those notebooks that have letters of the alphabet on the side? Like telephone notebooks, but it is a notebook with lines and everything else. First of all buy it. Then you will make it your personalized dictionary. Each new word that you read or learn, you will enter in the dictionary together with the translation. For example Go. Go to the G section and enter your translation. Then when you learn another word that begins with G, you should do the following: Write this second word below Go (example). When you are finished, read the first word and the second one. When you write the third one, read the first, second and the third, and so on. The beauty of the method is that if you write 50 words, the word Go you will have read at least 49 times, or that is, it will be almost impossible to forget after reading it so many times.

Short-term e Long-term, significam curto prazo e longo prazo, respectivamente. Esses conceitos são importantes ferramentas para medir o sucesso de algum projeto e são utilizados em diversas áreas: financeira, pessoal e nos negócios apenas para listar algumas (to name a few).

Committed to, é normalmente utilizado quando você está comprometido com alguma coisa/tarefa. Exemplo: I’m committed to the project.

Agora vamos ler novamente o texto tentando memorizar a forma com que o vocabulário foi utilizado. Tente não traduzir ou pensar em Português.

• The – a pronuncia tradicional é /ðə/, onde o “ə” é o som de schwa, popularmente é como se fosse o som de “da”, esta pronúncia é utilizada somente antes de sons de consoantes, como no exemplo: “The book is on the table”. Quando o the está antes de sons de vogais a pronúncia muda para /ðiː/ , popularmente “di”. Veja o exemplo: The Umbrella.
• Of – para pronunciar corretamente essa palavra lembre-se da palavra “ovo” sem o último “o”. Fica algo como “ãv”. Se vc pronunciar o “f” vira outra palavra, “off”.
• Have – uma das maneiras de estrangeiro identificar que você é Brasileiro é essa. Normalmente os Brasileiros pronunciam “rév”. Mas o correto é “hæve”, onde o “æ” é um misto entre o “a” e o “e”.

The word Iguaçú means “big water” in the tupi-guarani etymology. The Iguaçú river, which forms the Falls eighteen km before the river meets the Paraná river, overcomes a ground unevenness and plunges 65m with a width of 2,780m. Its geological formation dates back to approximately 150 million years.

The Iguaçú River is 1,200 wide upstream from the Falls and downstream it narrows down to a 65m channel. The total width of the Fall in the Brazilian territory is around 800m and 1,900m on the Argentinean side. Depending on the river flow, the number of waterfalls ranges from 150 to 300 and the height of said waterfalls ranges from 40 to 82m, accounting for a 2,700m semicircular shape. The average water flow of the river is around 1,500m3, ranging from 500m3/s during the draught season to 6,500m3/s during the flood season.

The individual waterfalls may range from 20 to 300 depending on the water volume. The large waterfalls are 19, three of them on the Brazilian side (Floriano, Deodoro and Benjamin Constant) while the remaining ones are on the Argentinean side. The position of the waterfalls, most of them on the Argentinean side and facing Brazil, provide a better view to those admiring the scenery from the Brazilian side.

After taking a wide turn and the rapids, the bulk of the falls plunges laterally into the deep erosion gorge, the Devil’s Gorge. This 85m high waterfall is the one most appreciated by tourists; its shape resembles a horseshoe.

A poltergeist (German for rumbling ghost) is widely believed to be an invisible ghost that interacts with others by moving and influencing inanimate objects. Stories featuring poltergeists typically focus heavily on raps, thumps, knocks, footsteps, and bed-shaking, all without a discernable point of origin.

When I was a child, my neighbor had this problem, stones flew from nowhere to a oldman’s head. My father told me that everything happens like in movie “The Exorcist”. I remember that night, I didn’t see anything, but my dad lit a candle, something that he had never done before. Nobody explained it to me, and it remains a mystery.

I already said it, I don’t believe it, but I fear…
