A little about the holiday itself. Labor Day is always observed on the first Monday of September. Many Brazilians ask me why we don’t observe this holiday on May 1st, like many other countries. I found this on Wikipedia-

The Knights of Labor organized the original parade on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. In 1884 another parade was held, and the Knights passed resolutions to make this an annual event. Other labor organizations (and there were many), but notably the affiliates of the International Workingmen’s Association, many of whom were socialists or anarchists, favored a May 1 holiday. In 1886 came the general strike which eventually won the eight-hour workday in the United States. These events are today commemorated as Labor Day in virtually every country in the world, with the notable exceptions being the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. With the Chicago Haymarket riots in early May of 1886, President Grover Cleveland believed that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the riots. Thus, fearing that it might strengthen the socialist movement, he quickly moved in 1887 to support the position of the Knights of Labor and their date for Labor Day.

Today Labor Day is often regarded simply as a day of rest and, compared to the May 1 Labor Day celebrations in most countries, parades, speeches or political demonstrations are more low-key, although especially in election years, events held by labor organizations often feature political themes and appearances by candidates for office. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer. Some teenagers and young adults view it as the last weekend for parties before returning to school. However, of late, schools have begun well before Labor Day, as early as the 24th of July in many urban districts, including Nashville and Atlanta. In addition, Labor Day marks the beginning of the season for the National Football League and NCAA College Football. The NCAA usually plays their first games the weekend of Labor day, with the NFL playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day.

On the 4th of July, there are picnics, barbeques, patriotic parades and the fireworks shows. A typical picnic will feature potato salad, hot dogs or hamburgers, apple pie, games like a three legged race, relay race, and gunny sack race, and croquet and badminton. And here is the July 4th celebration with the Boston Pops. ( Click here )

When my children were growing up, we traditionally took them to see the parade in our local community and to have an ice cream cone out at Baskin Robbins. Some years they participated in the parade. They decorated their bicycles with crepe paper streamers in red, white and blue, and wore red white and blue clothes and rode their bikes in the parade, following the high school marching band, marching mothers who had decorated their baby’s strollers with crepe paper streamers and pushed their babies on a long walk in the parade, veterans, fire engines, police, and floats (big motor powered wagons that have been decorated with a theme to make a statement about the holiday). We made potato salad and packed sandwiches and filled the cooler with soda and perishable foods to barbeque and headed out in the van for a picnic at the Willows or to Ridley Park State Forest. We played soccer and badminton and ball, and feed the geese bread. This is a three legged race. You and a partner tie your legs together and run in competition with other pairs similarly encumbered. Our three legged races did not include the jug filling activity featured here in this video, but it looks like good, clean fun in the spirit that is felt during the 4th of July celebrations across the country. After our barbeque picnic, we went to an official fireworks show. They start at dusk, and families camp out on blankets or on their car roofs for a better view, to watch the festivities. Fireworks shows at Pen’s landing and Narberth Park are coordinated with a soundtrack of patriotic music and local bands also perform before the fireworks display. The children love watching the fireworks, and one can see children waving sparklers in circular figure-eight patterns, wearing luminescent necklaces that glow in the dark, catching fireflies in jars, running around jubilantly, laughing, singing, playing tag, and feeling free. It is a very patriotic day. Some families bring their own fireworks to the public fireworks displays and set them off to entertain their children while they are waiting for the professional fireworks show to begin. Before they were outlawed, we used to buy firecrackers, roman candles, pop-bottle rockets, stink bombs, snakes, fountains, and exploding stars, and whirligig spirals (not the official name, but I can’t remember what they were called back then). Our dogs liked the picnics, but they barked at the noise of the firecrackers, which they didn’t like. This is the 4th of July Celebration at Disney-MGM Studios 2005. ( Click here )

A little history about Father’s Day in the US from Wikipedia

In the United States, the first modern Father’s Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December. This explosion killed 361 men, many of them fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mother’s Day, which had recently been celebrated for the first time in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away.

It was created to honor the fallen Union soldiers in the American Civil War. Nowadays, we remember fallen soldiers from any war or family members we have lost.

Memorial Day is commonly known as the start of the summer season. We like to get together with family members to do outdoor activities such as barbecuing, having picnics, and going to beach. Sometimes, I like going camping, but I did not do that this year. Perhaps I will go camping for Labor Day, which is the first Monday of September.

In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also a time for picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events. Some Americans view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer and Labor Day as the unofficial end of the season. The national Click it or ticket campaign ramps up beginning Memorial Day weekend, noting the beginning of the most dangerous season for auto accidents and other safety related incidents. The USAF “101 Critical days of summer” also begin on this day as well. Some Americans use Memorial Day to also honor any family members who have died, not just servicemen.

I like Memorial Day because I don’t have to work :)

President Wilson declared Mother’s Day an official holiday in 1914 after Anna Jarvis initiated efforts to commemorate motherhood. One can read about the origins of Mother’s Day in many articles on the internet, for example Mother’s Day , so I would like to give you a more personal account, an insider’s view so to speak, of how we celebrated Mother’s Day in my family.

In my family, we would take the family out to IHOP (International House of Pancakes) for breakfast when the children were small. One year they surprised me by making me pancakes themselves from scratch, using their grandmother’s recipe, and serving me and my husband in bed. With freshly squeezed orange juice, which they squeezed with their tiny precious hands. They were excited about the new computer software we had just gotten, which makes holiday cards, and they composed me the following card. “To our honorable, mineral water mother! love, M—and C—“. It was illustrated by clip art that they lovingly chose. You may well be wondering what in the world mineral water has to do with mothering. Children learn languages differently than adults. When I had taught them the words “honorable and venerable” as words that show respect, they had remembered them as “mineral water, which was the kind of water we ordered in restaurants when we went out.” I treasured that card which showed the tender hearts of loving children eager to show their mother their special, innocent love in the most respectful manner possible.

Another time each of my children composed me a song and performed it for me. They would invite their friends over to perform skits for us mothers and share cake that the children had baked for the occasion.

When I was young, I wrote my Mother a card using the letters of the word Mother to begin each line of the message, like this:

M – because you’re Marvelous
O – your’re Oh so beautiful
T – This card is to show you how much you mean to me
H – Hugs to show you how much I love you
R – youré Really wonderful.
S – So, Happy Mother’s Day—I love you!

In school the students prepare presentations for their mothers to attend: skits, recitations of poetry, songs, art work, or giving a speech they researched and wrote for the holiday. The teachers often devote some class time to gift making. When I was young, we made our mothers elegant silhouettes of our profile by tracing onto black construction paper, the outline of our shadow, cast by a projector onto the classroom wall. My daughter’s class was still making these classic silhouettes for a new generation of mothers, and it filled my heart with a mother’s pride to receive this precious and unique gift of my daughter’s profile cut out with care by her young hands.

Teachers plan their lessons around the development of tiny motor skills. Learning to cut with scissors and how to string beads is very difficult for young students. So, it meant so much more to me than any store bought gift could have meant to see how my daughter had succeeded at cutting out the difficult shape of her profile by herself. (Maybe the teacher helped a little).

When she was in Kindergarten, she made me a necklace. Her 5 year old fingers could not use a normal sized needle to string regular beads. They used huge wooden beads with large holes so the thick string would easily pass through the holes. I still have that necklace and I have received many compliments on it, because it is so unusual. I proudly tell them my daughter made it for me, if they can’t tell.

My children were always very creative and put a lot of love and thought into their gifts.

My son made me a porcelain duck which he painted in art class. In shop class, he made me a wooden clock which he assembled, stained and varnished himself.

My oldest daughter made me a lamp which she carved herself out of wood, and my other daughter made me vases and other pottery in art class.

My children thought of the idea to make me coupons, which I could cash in whenever I wanted. For example, one coupon was good for a free carwash. Or I could cash in a coupon for having the lawn mowed or the dishes done or the vacuuming done by the kids. I always loved celebrating Mother’s Day with my Mom and later when I had my own family, with my kids. In my family, we started celebrating Children’s Day like they do in Japan to reciprocate all their love they showered and their Dad me with, although it is not common in the United States.

Children learn what they live. In my house my children gave me wonderful Mother’s Days, filled with love. I will always fondly remember all they did for me.

Carnival in Brazil is a time to let your spirit fly. It is an illusion factory where you can be whoever you fantasize.

Carnaval no Brasil é época de “liberar geral”. É uma fábrica de ilusões, onde você pode viver uma fantasia.

It is a season free from prejudice in which different races, beliefs and social classes mix in a popular demonstration of joy, pleasure, luxury and sensuality. A huge ritual filled with symbolism, moments of complete chaos and cultural disorder that contribute in a positive way to a world of peace.

É um tempo livre de preconceitos, quando pessoas de diferentes raças, crenças e classes sociais se unem numa demonstração popular de alegria, prazer, luxúria e sensualidade. É um grande ritual cheio de simbolismo, momentos de caos total e desordem cultural que contribui de maneira positiva para a paz no mundo.

All around the country, streets are busy, people are excited and the rhythm is spread. However, only Rio de Janeiro hosts “the biggest spectacle on Earth”, The Samba Schools´s Parade. It is a 2-day championship during which the 13 top schools show what they carefully prepared throughout the year. Thousands of artists, fashion designers, artisans, and volunteers work tirelessly for months.

Por todo país, as ruas ficam cheias, as pessoas animadas, e o ritmo do samba se espalha. No entanto, só o Rio de Janeiro apresenta “o maior espetáculo da Terra”, o Desfile das Escolas de Samba. São dois dias de competição durante os quais 13 escolas de samba do Grupo Especial mostram o que prepararam com muito zelo durante o ano. Milhares de artistas, designers de moda, artesãos e voluntários trabalham incansavelmente por meses a fio.

The result of such effort seduces not only the jury but millions of Brazilians and foreign spectators that are either at the sambadrome or watching it live on TV. Glamourous handmade costumes, creative lyrics, melody, and choreographies, huge floats that cross the sambadrome on wheels, and the heart-beating of countless percussionists make the crowd go crazy.

O resultado de tanto esforço encanta, não somente os jurados, mas também milhões de brasileiros e turistas que vão ao Sambódromo ou assistem o desfile, ao vivo, pela TV. As glamourosas fantasias feitas à mão, as letras, melodias e coreografias criativas, os carros alegóricos e a batida no compasso dos inúmeros percussionistas levam a multidão à loucura.

The organization needed is amazing and counts points for the school´s score. So, orders are strictly followed but in an amusing manner. Helpers push the floats while dancing to the samba; school directors manage their sections while singing; those who wear the heaviest costumes smile happily; drummers with hut hands play even harder; and workers forget Brazil´s social gaps to party feeling fulfilled.

A organização necessária para o evento é impressionante e conta pontos para cada escola. Portanto, as ordens passadas são rigorosamente seguidas, mas num clima descontraído. Ajudantes empurram os carros pela avenida sambando; os diretores comandam suas alas cantando; aqueles destaques da escola que vestem as fantasias mais pesadas sorriem felizes; e os trabalhadores se esquecem das disparidades sociais brasileiras para viver a alegria de um dia de folia.

The poor and the rich, tourists and locals, straight and gay people come together in a scene of frenzy and harmony. The Afro-Brazilian women´s dancing skills leave all in awe. People sing and shake their bodies every time a school passes by, regardless of the one you cheer for. The schools do their best to be among the top five and guarantee their position in the ranking for next year´s Carnival.

Ricos e pobres, turistas e cariocas, heterossexuais e gays se unem em harmonia num cenário frenético. O requebrado das mulatas deixa todos boquiabertos. As pessoas cantam e dançam com a passagem de cada escola pela Marquês de Sapucaí, independente se for ou não a escola do coração. As escolas fazem o melhor para estar entre as cinco mais pontuadas e garantir uma boa colocação para o próximo carnaval.

If you think Rio´s carnival is over after the parade, think again. Samba City continues opening daily from noon to 8 pm. Every Monday and Thursday night the main attraction is the Cidadão Samba Showcase. Featuring over 80 samba stars from the top Samba Schools in town, Cidadão Samba dazzles the audience with the magic of samba with a journey from the classics of Tom Jobim and Dorival Caymmi to the latest hits from Sambadrome.

Se você acha que o carnaval no Rio acaba depois do desfile está enganado. A Cidade do Samba funciona diariamente de meio-dia às 20 horas. A grande atração é o espetáculo Cidadão Samba realizado nas noites de segundas e quintas-feiras. Um elenco formado por 80 estrelas das Escolas do Grupo Especial mostra toda magia do samba, fazendo uma viagem por obras de Tom Jobim, Dorival Caymmi, desaguando em samba enredos que sacudiram o sambódromo.

Today is a day to commemorate our love for the Earth: *Earth Day. In Brazil it is called Dia da Terra. In the town where I used to work, Narberth, they celebrate by having a garden show. The call it NarbEARTH Day. The prettiest properties in the town are put on display in a self-guided walking tour. The gardens feature beautiful flowers and trees in bloom and artistic landscaping. Some yards even have fish ponds, and ornamental rock gardens.Today they will be planting beach grass at Island Beach State Park in New Jersey and cleaning up the beach. The beach grass will help stem (stop) further erosion of the sand dunes. I went to Island beach State Park yesterday and took the nature trail walk and bird watching tour. (Mary Ziller from USA)

Hi people! I´m glad to be back.

Dando seqüência, decidi escrever para vocês sobre a grande atração turística que marca a virada do ano no Rio: O Reveillon em Copacabana.

Moving on, I decided to write to you about the great tourist attraction which marks the turning of the year in Rio: New Year´s Eve in Copacabana.

Durante esse verdadeiro festival pela paz, milhares de pessoas se reúnem todos os anos no dia 31 de dezembro, a grande maioria vestidos de branco, para esperar a chegada do ano novo em que é marcado por um intenso e inesquecível espetáculo de fogos de artifícios que acontecem à meia noite. Conjuntamente às comemorações do ano novo estão os aspectos místicos e religiosos de muitos brasileiros em que tem como seus deuses, a rainha do mar Iemanjá, cuja festa acontece na virada do ano. Milhares de oferendas à luz de velas são postas às ondas do mar em homenagem a ela.

During this true festival of peace, several millions of people come together each year on December 31, the vast majority dressed in white, to await the arrival of the New Year which is marked with a massive and unforgettable spectacle of fireworks displayed at midnight. Interwoven throughout the New Year celebrations are the religious and mystic aspect of a number of Brazilians which have as one of their gods, the queen of the sea, Iemanjá whose feast day is celebrated with the turning of the year. Thousands of offering of candlelight are thrown out into the surf to pay homage to Iemanjá.

Todos os hotéis se aprontam para a grande festa, preparando sofisticadas refeições e oferecendo aos turistas o máximo em hospitalidade. Muitos moradores saem às ruas para confraternizar e garantir a sua diversão ao assistir os fogos de artifícios das areias de Copacabana. Na verdade esse é o maior espetáculo de fogos de artifícios do mundo que vale a pena ser visto.

All the hotels get ready for the great party, by preparing sophisticated meals and offering ultimate hospitality to the tourists. Most residents take to the streets to mingle and have fun by watching the fireworks from the beach. Indeed, this is the planet´s greatest fireworks show that is really worth seeing.

Além de Copacabana, a prefeitura do Rio organiza festivais em outras partes da cidade, tal como no Parque do Flamengo, Ipanema, Leblon, praias da Barra, centro da cidade, bem como em outros locais das zonas norte e oeste. Em outras palavras, todos comemoram na rua, com exceção daqueles que vão a festas particulares.

Apart from Copacabana, Rio´s city hall organizes festivities in other parts of the city, such as in Flamengo Park, Leblon and Barra beaches, in downtown, and in the western and northern zones. In other words, all except those going to private parties come out to celebrate in the streets.

A festa continua madrugada a dentro e o clima festivo que começou à meia noite continua até o final do verão.

The party goes on into the early hours and the festive climate which started in mid December, continues until the end of summer.

Today is Easter Sunday. We are having record cold weather here in Denver, Colorado with snow, so the children’s Easter egg hunt will be moved indoors. My mother, the matriarch of the family, is planning a special egg hunt to augment the traditional hunt (with boiled and colored Easter eggs). Her egg hunt will use plastic eggs which she has filled with coins for a special treat for her great grandkids.

There is a well visited tourist attraction in the area I am visiting called Red Rocks with an amphitheatre made from special type of red colored flagstone rocks. Traditionally on Easter, they offer a Sunrise Easter Service. The spectacular mountain view enhances the Easter religious experience.

Denver is the Mile High city because its altitude lies one mile above sea level. So, Denverites are one mile closer to Heaven than others–just kidding. hehe The air is noticeably thinner here at this high altitude. People who move here from lower altitudes can feel short of breath when they exert themselves physically (climbing stairs or hiking up the mountains). Athletes who trained here for the Olympics had an advantage because they were accustomed to performing in the thin air could compete well in the thin air and even better in air of normal density.

Denver is famous for the Rocky Mountains with its National Parks. White water rafting, skiing, mountain climbing, snow boarding, hiking, boating, fishing (mountain stream trout is delicious) are some activities that attract the locals and tourists as well. Last time I was here, I visited the grave of Buffalo Bill, an American rodeo performer, an authentic ghost town that has been restored, The Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds, Royal Gorge, and stayed in a cabin in Vale Colorado. Yes, there was a science conference in Vale where my husband was a speaker. All of our travels are linked to math conferences. Hehe I will be seeing some of you this May and June when my husband’s math travels bring him back to the math institute in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

Here in the US it is popular for the family to dress up in their best clothes on Easter and go to church. After church children decorate and color eggs. There are special dyes sold for coloring the Easter eggs. Each child receives an Easter basket and is told that the Easter Bunny brought the basket as a gift. The Easter basket is filled with chocolate eggs and Bunnies and small toys. The family has a big meal, like at a family reunion. All the grandparents, aunts and uncles and sometimes out of town relatives travel to go to the Easter celebration. After the meal, the children have an Easter Egg Hunt. The eggs that they had colored are hidden in the garden, and they search for them. The one who finds the most, is the winner.

When we arrive at the airport, there are long check-in lines. When we get to the check-in counter, we are told my flight has been cancelled. The next flight leaves in the evening, so I will be spending the day in the airport.

Looking at the departure screen, I see there are flights I could take leaving sooner, so I go to the terminal where the next flight is leaving and ask at the desk if I can fly stand-by. I am told yes, if I go to the customer service desk in another terminal. There is not enough time to walk there, and the clerk cannot make the change for me via the phone. So, I miss that flight.

There is another flight scheduled for 45 minutes later. That should be enough time to get my plane ticket exchanged and reassigned. So, I go to the customer service desk in the other terminal. The customer service agent enters my changes in the computer, but does not have time to issue me a new boarding pass. She tells me I have to run to make the flight. So I do. I run to the next terminal, and I arrive in time.

When I go to check-in there, I am told that the flight was overbooked. There is no room for stand-bys. So, I am stranded here until this evening. I hope my flight this evening will not be cancelled.

Aqueles que me conhecem, sabem que eu não ia perder a oportunidade de fazer uma brincadeira. Acredite, a maioria das pessoas não chegam nem mesmo a acessar a página, simplesmente copiam o texto resumido direto da consulta do Google. Você é diferente, por isso chegou até aqui. Vamos agora aos esclarecimentos. Primeiro, hoje é o dia da mentira, se você estava acreditando, eu te peguei. ;-) Em Inglês, dia da mentira é April Fool’s Day, não vou ficar falando muito sobre isso senão os descuidados que provavelmente vão ler só os dois primeiros parágrafos vão descobrir muito fácil a brincadeira. Segundo, você já ouviu falar de hoax? Um hoax é tentar fazer as pessoas acreditarem em algo que não é verdade. Um exemplo são as fotos do acidente com o avião da Gol, que na verdade foram extraídas da série Lost. O Cardoso fala muito bem disso. Esse post só não é um hoax porque eu esclareci tudo no final do texto então não estou enganando ninguém. Azar de quem lê as coisas pela metade. So, happy april fool’s day. Fica aí a lição!

A pergunta que não quer se calar: How do Americans spend Thanksgiving? People eat, they eat a lot. Por ser um dia de celebração a ordem é comer bastante ;-)

The proclamation by President Washington in 1789, was a recommendation of a resolution established by both Houses of Congress establishing the first national Thanksgiving Day on November 26, 1789.

O primeiro dia de ação de graças Americano foi em 26 de Novembro de 1979. A resolução foi assinada pelo presidente Washington naquele mesmo ano. A partir dessa data ele é sempre comemorado na quarta quinta-feira no mês de novembro.

So, happy Thanksgiving!
