Host Man: I’ve just…got had an email just come in from Alessandro, is that the correct spelling? Alessandro. Great pronunciation yes (lots of laughs). And nice question, it’s about English… British and American English I guess. I would like to know if the British have problems with American movies, I mean the English and the grammar. And then…he says: you are top notch. Talking about the program (lots of laughs) that’s very nice Alessandro. What about that?

Guest Woman: That’s interesting, ‘cos we’ve been talking about spelling but we do find the American accents difficult to understand.

Guest Man: I find that some American accents, especially in Movies, especially with the sound may be kind of indistinct, very difficult, and increasingly difficult actually.

Guest Woman: I saw Broke Back Mountain the other day, and I have to say I really enjoyed it, but in the first fifteen minutes I couldn’t understand what was being said at all.

Presenter Woman: Although I having said that though, I think even within in the UK we also have difficulties understanding each other. For example, I sometimes find Scottish people quite difficult to understand. (Lots of laughs)

Um dos maiores desafios de quem está aprendendo inglês é identificar as variações do idioma em diferentes países. Se você for para os Estados Unidos, Austrália, Inglaterra, ou qualquer outro país em que o Inglês é a língua principal, você irá notar as diferenças. Elas não se restringem às variações de vocabulário, gramática ou pronúncia, existem também influências culturais que afetam a forma com que o idioma é falado.Um exemplo clássico é no uso da expressão “Eh?” pelos Canadenses, esta expressão é utilizada como se fosse uma “tag question” ou para enfatizar alguma idéia. Exemplo:

The weather is nice, eh?
(O tempo está bom, não está?)

Ao ouvir um Canadense falando observe como ele usa o “eh”, mas saiba que este artifício não deve ser usado em situações formais.

Outra forma de identificar se o Inglês tem sotaque (accent) britânico ou americano basta observar, por exemplo, na forma com eles dizem a palavra beautiful. No britânico você vai perceber o T bem puxado quase nordestino (hehehe, estou exagerando é claro), se for um americano ele vai pronunciar o T quase com um R.

Você acha difícil escrever no idioma de Shakespeare? Talvez você se conforme após saber que até mesmo os nativos do idioma têm problemas com a ortografia. Atualmente o Inglês é de longe a linguagem com a ortografia mais irregular, a distância entre o que se fala e o que se escreve é brutal. Neste quesito ele é seguido de perto pelo Francês que apresenta dificuldade parecida na codificação (escrita), porém quando se fala em decodificação (leitura) o Inglês é líder isolado em nível de dificuldade.Um fato curioso é que na Inglaterra existem até competições para descobrir quem é o melhor “speller”, traduzido de forma tosca para o português como Soletrador (aquele que soletra). Fato que não faria sentido para quem fala Português, Espanhol ou Italiano dada a similaridade entre a escrita e a fala. Eles levam tão a sério essas competições que a BBC de Londres apresenta, no formato do Show do Milhão, um programa chamado “Hard Spell”, que pode ser traduzido como “Difícil de Soletrar” ou algo assim. Neste programa de TV, jovens de escolas Britânicas competem para ver quem soletra corretamente o maior número de palavras em menos tempo. Em conversa com Adam, um dos administradores do projeto Wikipedia americano, obtive a seguinte resposta quando perguntei porque o Inglês falado e o escrito são tão diferentes: “some spelling is not standard because the spellings are old and the pronunciations have changed’. Resumindo, a ortografia ficou ultrapassada enquanto a pronúncia evoluiu.

Outro fator que também influencia o Inglês falado (Spoken English) é a invasão de palavras estrangeiras. Por exemplo, as palavras chaos, chorus and chemist tem origem Grega, por isso nestes casos o CH tem som de K. Encerro hoje com uma citação de Shakespeare.
