Estou ansioso para contar a vocês sobre onde estive na manhã de sábado passado. Eu visitei o Cristo Redentor (Christ The Redeemer), também chamado de o Corcovado (Corcovado Mountain). E acreditem vocês, eu fiquei maravilhado com tudo que experimentei naquele lugar: a grandeza da estátua e, sobretudo, do esplendor da vista que de lá é proporcionada.

Vamos agora a uma breve descrição histórica, geográfica e informativa a respeito deste imperdível paraíso turístico no Rio.

The Christ Statue, high on Corcovado Mountain, is the registered trademark of Rio. You have probably already seen it in a postcard but once you get there the view will be stamped in your mind for a lifetime. This is the first touristy place you want to visit to have a clear picture of Rio’s layout. The spot offers a 360 degree view of the city. Take the map with you and figure it all out! A favorite pastime is to identify points of reference, beaches and other picture postcard views such as the Sugar Loaf or the Marcacanã stadium.

A estátua do Cristo, no alto do morro do Corcovado é a marca registrada do Rio. Você provavelmente já o viu em um cartão postal, mas quando você chegar lá em cima, esta imagem jamais sairá de sua memória. Este é o primeiro lugar que se deve visitar para se ter uma idéia de como é o Rio. Lá você pode ver a cidade de todos os ângulos. Leve um mapa consigo para entender tudo aquilo lá. A melhor brincadeira durante a visita é identificar pontos de referência, praias e outros cartões postais como o Pão de Açúcar ou Maracanã.

To get to the top you can go by car, bus or on the little electric train that climbs through the forest, and has panoramic windows so as not to miss any of the sights. I myself went by motorcycle on which I could better breathe the pure and fresh air from the forest. The train station is in a place named Cosme Velho. Once you are at the top you still have to climb long stairways to the statue or alternatively take an escalator built to help the elderly and the not so fit. Nothing is more impressive than the statue itself, so tall that the serene expression on the face of the Redeemer is still far above you. The proximity of the huge statue is something you will never forget.

Para se chegar até lá, pode-se ir de carro, ônibus ou pelo trenzinho elétrico que corcoveia a encosta cercada pela mata, com janelas panorâmicas que não deixam perder um só momento. Eu fui de motocicleta na qual pude respirar melhor o ar fresco e puro da floresta. A estação do trenzinho fica no Cosme Velho. Uma vez no topo da montanha você ainda terá que subir uma longa escadaria até chegar à estátua ou como opção você pode pegar uma escada rolante construída com a finalidade de ajudar aos mais idosos ou aos que não se acham bem fisicamente. Mas nada impressiona mais que a beleza da obra e a fisionomia plácida do Redentor. A proximidade da enorme estátua é algo que você jamais esquecerá.

The statue is made of soapstone, stands about 30 meters/100 feet high, and is about the same size as the Statue of Liberty. There is no way to go up the monument. No need. It is on the peak of Corcovado Mountain (2.330 feet/710 meters) that splits the city in two; the northern and southern regions. The Christ the Redeemer Statue was created as a project done in Art Deco style by the Brazilian engineer Heitor Da Silva Costa and a French sculptor to mark the Republic’s 100th anniversary, although it was only inaugurated 10 years afterward. The money was raised from donations.

A estátua, de pedra sabão, mede 30 m de altura e é quase do mesmo tamanho que a Estátua da Liberdade. Não há como entrar dentro do monumento. E nem precisa. Está no cume do Corcovado (710m), que divide a cidade em duas zonas: norte e sul. Feita em estilo Arte Deco, a estátua que foi um projeto do engenheiro brasileiro Heitor da Silva Costa e um escultor francês, serviria para marcar os cem anos da República em 1921, mas só foi inaugurada 10 anos depois. A verba para a realização da obra foi adquirida através de doações.

Dando seqüência, decidi escrever para vocês sobre a grande atração turística que marca a virada do ano no Rio: O Reveillon em Copacabana.

Moving on, I decided to write to you about the great tourist attraction which marks the turning of the year in Rio: New Year´s Eve in Copacabana.

Durante esse verdadeiro festival pela paz, milhares de pessoas se reúnem todos os anos no dia 31 de dezembro, a grande maioria vestidos de branco, para esperar a chegada do ano novo em que é marcado por um intenso e inesquecível espetáculo de fogos de artifícios que acontecem à meia noite. Conjuntamente às comemorações do ano novo estão os aspectos místicos e religiosos de muitos brasileiros em que tem como seus deuses, a rainha do mar Iemanjá, cuja festa acontece na virada do ano. Milhares de oferendas à luz de velas são postas às ondas do mar em homenagem a ela.

During this true festival of peace, several millions of people come together each year on December 31, the vast majority dressed in white, to await the arrival of the New Year which is marked with a massive and unforgettable spectacle of fireworks displayed at midnight. Interwoven throughout the New Year celebrations are the religious and mystic aspect of a number of Brazilians which have as one of their gods, the queen of the sea, Iemanjá whose feast day is celebrated with the turning of the year. Thousands of offering of candlelight are thrown out into the surf to pay homage to Iemanjá.

Todos os hotéis se aprontam para a grande festa, preparando sofisticadas refeições e oferecendo aos turistas o máximo em hospitalidade. Muitos moradores saem às ruas para confraternizar e garantir a sua diversão ao assistir os fogos de artifícios das areias de Copacabana. Na verdade esse é o maior espetáculo de fogos de artifícios do mundo que vale a pena ser visto.

All the hotels get ready for the great party, by preparing sophisticated meals and offering ultimate hospitality to the tourists. Most residents take to the streets to mingle and have fun by watching the fireworks from the beach. Indeed, this is the planet´s greatest fireworks show that is really worth seeing.

Além de Copacabana, a prefeitura do Rio organiza festivais em outras partes da cidade, tal como no Parque do Flamengo, Ipanema, Leblon, praias da Barra, centro da cidade, bem como em outros locais das zonas norte e oeste. Em outras palavras, todos comemoram na rua, com exceção daqueles que vão a festas particulares.

Apart from Copacabana, Rio´s city hall organizes festivities in other parts of the city, such as in Flamengo Park, Leblon and Barra beaches, in downtown, and in the western and northern zones. In other words, all except those going to private parties come out to celebrate in the streets.

A festa continua madrugada a dentro e o clima festivo que começou à meia noite continua até o final do verão.

The party goes on into the early hours and the festive climate which started in mid December, continues until the end of summer.
