Olá a todos!

Gostaria de compartilhar com vocês uma breve explicação sobre quando utilizar between ou among que significam "entre".

Between diferencia duas coisas ou mais separadas no singular ou no plural.

Ex.1: "He shared the money equally between Jake and Mary".

Ex.2: "Economic relations between Great Britain, France, and Italy are tense at present."

Among significa “um de muitos” e, geralmente, é usado com substantivos no plural.

Ex.1: "Her exam results put her among the top 10% of students in her group."

Ex.2: "Among the milling ballplayers, fans, and reporters were the four umpires."

Fiquem à vontade para complementar a explicação.

Hugs! ;)

Nem sempre... Between é entre duas ou mais coisas quando elas são enumeradas. Exemplo: "This relationship between, you, me, David, Jenny, John, Stewart, Roger, Mary, Jack, Mario, Wario, Luigi, Link, Timmy and Matt is going very well!" Among não funcionaria aqui, tem que ser between, e é com (bem) mais de duas coisas/pessoas.

E among é quando não estão enumeradas: "You are among the top-scoring students in this school! Keep it up!", "I am just one among over 7 billion people in the world! Isn't it weird, when you think about it?", "Congratulations! The four of you have been chosen among 30 other people!", etc. Imagine que among é entre anônimos e between é entre gente com nome, daí fica fácil ;)

Excellent, G7Luis.

Here's a little exercise in choosing between 'among' and 'between':

_______ Americans, there are significant differences _________ the rich and the poor.
_______ other subjects, this is a topic for serious discussion _________ Americans.

Have fun!
