Hi Marcio, se omitir o 'down' e usar apenas to strike, fica errado, mesmo sendo uma forma mais 'poética' de se expressar? ^^ Espero que tenha sentido o que estou falando!! ^^

Ravenna, no, I don't think it does. As a matter of fact, you'd still get your idea across. I'd like to hear more from the other forum users/experts on it, though. I don't hold all the truths of grammar-related subjects. Sometimes I won't tell an A from a B!

Fair enough Marcio. By the way I googled the phrase "struck by disease" and then 'I found lots of examples... Let's wait to see what the other experts say...^^

Eu cheguei a pensar, "caught by an illness" , no entanto eu nunca ouví ou lí tal coisa, não sei se é certo.

Very well said, gabi.

I googled "disease-stricken" and "disease-smitten," both of which in some way have to do with becoming (seriously) afflicted with or overwhelmed by or as if by disease.

As I browsed my copy of W3 on CD, I found "took down sick" as in <man ... who was bearing most of the fitting-out expense took down sick — J.F.Dobie>[1] meaning the man "became seized or attacked especially by illness."
