What about "I have been waiting for this for three years." ?
"for three years", right after "waiting" gives me the impression that the person was waiting for the three years (nonsense, at all!)

I don't like prepositions in the beginning of questions
(although you've already taught me it is sometimes possible!) but in this particular one, it's wrong...the first option seems to be the most appropriate, although we had to eliminate one of the "for"s that seemed "so" essential...
