The expression refers to more than just women, potential girlfriends, etc. It makes reference to things that we are not qualified for, people who are better than we, etc.

I play the guitar, but I am not in Baden Powell's league.
You speak Guarani well, but Carlos speaks it even better. You are out of his league.

The term clearly comes from a sport such as football or baseball. If you compare "Os Tigres de Mogi das Cruzes" with "International" of Porto Alegre, International is way out their league. Note how "way" is used for emphasis.
