On Longman dictionary, they put (as an example) exactly what you wrote: "The cat went up on the roof"

So, I guess both yours and Donay's suggestions are correct.

My doubt was exatlly about the preposition "on".
I know that "to go up" means "subir" in Portugueese, but about the preposition "on", it apears some redundant... I don't know.

and the one which I think is more suitable to your question.
