Olá Pessoal,

Booby trap: a trap for an unsuspecting person, esp one intended as a practical joke, such as an object balanced above a door to fall on the person who opens it. [Thefreedictionary]

Ex: I thought it was a booby trap. (Eu achei que era uma pegadinha.)

Boa sorte!

Hello Everyone,

Dúvida!
Para este caso, podemos usar também "prank"?

Prank
A trick that is intended to be amusing but not to cause harm or damage
Ex.: I've had enough of your childish pranks

Kisses,

Hi Donay

Practical joke does make sense as "pegadinha"?

A hoax is often carried out as a practical joke, to cause embarrassment to someone.
Um trote é frequentemente enviado como pegadinha para causar vergonha a alguém.

I searched at google but I`m not sure.

Main Entry: booby trap Pronunciation Guide
Function: noun
Etymology: 1booby
1 : a trap for the unwary or unsuspecting: a : a trap laid to play a trick on an unwary person <booby traps with buckets of water suspended over doors -- Robert Graves> b : a concealed explosive device usually attached to some harmless-looking object <the booby trap exploded when he touched the doorknob> c : an object wired to set off an explosion when touched <the car, which they suspected might be a booby trap -- Combined Operations>
2 : a critical or potentially dangerous aspect (as of a problem or situation) : PITFALL <words and expressions which are booby traps when used in the other language -- Richard Joseph>

The usual meaning of "boobytrap" is military. The purpose is to kill or maim the enemy. In many ways, it is better to injure the enemy than kill him. If he is killed, he is replaced. End of problem. But he is seriously injured, he requires medical care, food, transportation, housing, etc. The injured soldier requires attention for days, perhaps years.

For "pegadinha", I'd suggest prank or practical joke. The pegadinhas I used to watch on Rede were not practical and they certainly were not jokes. They showed cruelty and callousness, and many people suffered because of them.

Olá a todos,

Me parece que "booby trap" tende a ser sim uma boa opção, obviamente considerando uma eventual conotação militar ou letal, como o Thomas mencionou, e o fato de não ser uma brincadeira exatamente positiva.

Gostei dessa frase: "I tell everyone, getting rich is life's biggest booby trap", Jim Koch (cofundador e chairman da Boston Beer Company)
Ainda segundo ele: "A small business is going to be very demanding of your time, your energy — it just eats your life. And if you're doing something you love, then you will accept and even enjoy that. If you're just doing it to get rich, you're gonna lose heart.".
