Donay, I'm used to "cleats" for "chuteira," but this may be a North-American term.

http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/hang+up+boots is an expression. It was found in the Cambridge dictionary, but was foreign to me.

It means to stop playing for good (permanently).

In American English you could say "He threw in the towel" which can be used for a one time event or permanently ending his career (giving up).

I know both expressions but I think the meanings are different.
"Pendurar as chuteiras" is related to retire, or to stop doing something one used to do.
"Jogar a toalha" (to throw the towel) refers to give up something, usually after trying very hard.

I agree with your observation as these two have very different meanings as you correct describe.

One alternative would be: call it a day

* The band decided to call it a day and each go their own way.
* Ronaldo decided to call it a day on his international career after an injury on his knee.
