This works better if the same plurality is kept in English, as in: "a chain of language schools" or "a chain of schools". Regards

I agree with Henry. When I hear the word chain, I think of restaurant chains. I would call a "chain" of schools a franchise.

For "rede" one could always use "network," for "network of schools." But I was simply commenting that "chain school" doesn't convey the meaning as properly as "school chain" or "chain of schools." It's a matter of which word is the modifier and which the noun.

I just didn't understand why Rondinelli and Mary used the term "franchise" here.
When we talk about a "rede" of schools it doesn't mean they are necessarily franchised.

Basically, in a nutshell, in a franchaise like Wizzard schools, each entity is purchased and is run by its owner as a business that follows a branded methodology and business practices.

In chain like Walmart or large banks, the individual stores or branches are a part of a corporate office and are run by managers.

Some terms:
School network = the internet connection in a school http://fcit.usf.edu/network/
Network of schools = an association of professionals, educators who give advice to schools
A network of schools is not several schools connected by a franchise or chain, but rather it is a group of educators socially networking to provide mentoring and exchange information among the professional members. The Art school network is an example. http://www.artsschoolsnetwork.org/.

A group of connected schools who share a common goal, and have joined together to achieve mutually beneficial end such as lowering pricing, sharing of resources, etc. is called a consortium. My institution belonged to a consortium for buying journals. Each library bought some of the journals from a list. The list was divided between the institutions. Institution A bought a set of journal subscriptions, Institution B bought a different set, Institution C did the same, and so on, until all of the desired journal subscriptions were purchased and spread out among the member institutitons in the consrotium. This saved money for each institution, and still covered the list of needed journals. Students from all of the member institutions could access the journal they needed through interlibrary loan from the institution that held the particular journal in question.
http://www.google.com/search?q=consorti ... =firefox-a has examples of consortia.

Begging to differ on a small detail. "Network" is also a common term for a number of schools owned and operated by one person or organization. For example:

"For-profit network Sociedad Educaciónal Tte. Dagoberto Godoy Ltda. operates seven schools: two are located in poor municipalities, four are in lower-middle-class municipalities, and one serves a middle-class municipality in Santiago. Owner Walter Oliva’s parents were teachers who founded most of the network’s schools in the 1970s and early ’80s. A successful entrepreneur, Oliva also has business investments in agriculture; he manages the schools and his other businesses from his headquarters in Santiago. Standardized test scores for these schools are high compared to the national average and very high compared to schools with similar students.

Nonprofit Catholic network Congregación Salesiana operates thirteen schools: five in Santiago, four in the south of Chile, and three in the central part of the country. The smallest school in the network serves around 600 students, the largest more than 1,700. Although most Congregación Salesiana schools outperform similar schools in Chile, test scores vary widely across the network."

See http://educationnext.org/scaling-up-in-chile/

Actually the word "rede" is much closer to "network" than to chain, so I didn't think this was much of a terminology issue.
