Talking about "Wonders", do you know which the "seven ancient wonders" are?

There they go:

1. The Great Pyramid of Giza
2. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
3. The Statue of Zeus
4. The Temple of Artemis
5. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
6. The Colossus at Rhodes
7. The Pharos of Alexandria

And the "seven modern wonders" who knows?

Actually, I'm challenging all EE users. I hope that a lot of them get curious - as you are - and make a search. This is a good way to really learn English, isn't it?

there you go. I think there isn't any official list. This one was made by the Swiss corporation New7wonders Foundation. They were announced in 2007.

1. Great Wall of China - China
2. Petra - Jordan
3. Christ the Redeemer - Brazil
4. Machu Pichu - Peru
5. Chichen Itza - Mexico
6. Roman Colosseum - Italy
7. Taj Mahal - India

8. Great Pyramid (Honorary Candidate) - Egypt

The Great Pyramid Giza was included in this list because Egypt was not happy with the fact that this original wonder would have to compete with the likes of Statue of Liberty, the Sydney Opera house and other modern landmarks when this project was initiated.

The american newspaper USA Today made a list of New seven wonders chosen by six judges in 2006. They also included the eighth wonder.

1. Potala Palace - Tibet/China
2. Old City of Jerusalem - Israel
3. Polar Ice caps - Polar regions
4. Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument - Hawaii/USA
5. Internet - ? (I didn't get this one)
6. Maya ruins - Mexico
7. Great Migration of Serengeti and Masai Mara - Tanzania/Kenia
8. Grand Canyon - USA

In fact, there are various lists of "Wonders of the World": natural, industrial, underwater, landmarks, and so on...
My favorite one is the American Society of Civil Engineers that compiled the following:

1. Panama Canal that joins the Atlantic and Pacific oceans;
2. Empire State Building that was constructed in 1931 and was the tallest building in the world for 40 years;
3. Netherlands North Sea Protection Works that protects a large area of land from the sea;
4. The Golden Gate Bridge that has enough steel to wrap around the world 3 times;
5. CN Tower in Toronto, Canada that is one of the tallest free-standing buildings;
6. Itaipu Dam that is the world's largest hydroelectric plant;
7. The Channel Tunnel or the "Chunnel" that joins France and England.

I like the list above the most because it was when I first met the word "wonder" in my English student life.
