Many people can confusing Over and On

Over, most of times, you use when you cannot touch, like :

The airplane overflies over me. // O avião sobrevoa sobre mim.
Now, i keep in touch with my family over the internet. // Agora, eu mantenho contaco com minha familia pela internet.

On, is more common when you CAN touch, like :

The book is on the table (you can touch the table) // O livvro esta sobre a mesa (você pode tocar a mesa.)

"over" nao pode ser usado no seu exemplo por isso:
if an event or period of time is over, it has finished:
The show is over (finished), meaning it ended.

Você pode, contudo, dizer que "something is left over", ou perguntar se "is there something left over", no sentido de restar ou haver após um certo período de consumo.

Is there any food left over? -> Sobrou alguma comida? / Ainda há alguma comida?

Como disseram acima, "over" tem inúmeros significados, contudo. Um uso muito comum é como advébio, quando se referindo ao movimento de se ir de um ponto a outro, já mecionado, ou quando se referindo a algo que cai de uma posição vertical a uma posição horizontal, como alguém que é empurrado, por exemplo; ainda de algo que é dobrado de modo que uma parte acaba sobre a outra ou de algo que vira ou é virado de ponta-cabeça. São usos para os quais "over" não possui qualquer tradução.

It got blown over - Ele foi soprado de modo que caiu deitado.

I went over and greeted the newcomers - Eu fui até lá e cumprimentei os recém-chegados.

Fold over the sheet -> Dobre a folha pela metade.

Turn it over - Vire-o, de modo que a parte de cima passa a encostar a superfície (vi isso no visor do meu micro-ondas, solicitando que a pessoa virasse o que havia dentro ao contrário)
