Need ou Needing?

Bom dia!

Estou com uma duvida.. Na frase: I called the restaurant this morning because they needed a cashier..
Eu poderia usar "were needing" ao inves de "needed"? e porque? E' comum usar "needing" no ingles falado?

"... they needed..." soa mais natural. Pelo menos aos meus ouvidos.

"Needing" é usado. Porém, não é tão comum e aceito quanto o nosso "precisando". Sugiro usar

Se eles ainda precisam/estão precisando:

They need a cashier.


Mais sobre "needing":

It's not INcorrect, it's just not the form you would most commonly use or hear. Generally, at least in my AE experience, if you say it like that you're simply emphasizing the more active state of needing, although I think I'd more frequently see it with a word like really. For example:

I need some food vs. I am really needing some food.
That guy stinks! He needs a shower! vs. That guy stinks! He is really needing a shower!

Sim, needed é melhor... se você quiser complicar mais um pouco, você pode escrever "they were in need of"... haa!
