Question tag negativa com "May"

May + Sujeito + not

Ex.: Mary may find her son again some day, may she not?
You and me may get 10 on the test, may we not?
They may come late, may they not?

That's it, folks. See you.

Caro Vitor:

Quanto as chamadas tag questions existem várias exceções e o may é uma delas (veja abaixo). Inicialmente podemos ficar supresos pois acostumamos a optar pelo verbo auxiliar/verb to be ou até mesmo modal para construir as chamadas tag questions:

I am righ, aren't I?

nothing came in the post did it?

let's go, shall we?

Help me, can you?

do it now, will you?

come over for a beer today, won't you?

I wish to leave now, may I?

Take care,

Daniel

VF, this website says NSE's consider may as a question word not very common in English. It goes on to say that they would rather restrict it to formal contexts. Less commonly will they employ the contracted negative form mayn't, which they consider rather old-fashioned. The website provides examples of mayn't as question tags for guidance only, stating NSE's would best avoid its use.

BUT let it not deter you or anyone else from using it, inasmuch as we all should benefit from learning yet this new feature of English, new to most of us ESL'ers. Every little curiosity, however small, about English definitely counts!

Onward with the show. :)

Complementando:

Não vejo problemas com frases como "she may win, may she not?"/ "he may go now, may he not?", porém, não recomendo o uso de "mayn't she, he, etc ", já que "mayn't" é incomum.

Boa sorte!

Da mesma forma que

Mary may find her son again some day, may she not?
You and me may get 10 on the test, may we not?
They may come late, may they not?

Temos

Mary could find her son again some day, could she not? [couldn`t she?]
You and me would get 10 on the test, would we not? [wouldn`t we?]
They will come late, will they not? [won`t they?]

Provavelmente quando queremos dizemos "she may win" (que não pode ser permissão), o comum seria dizer "she might win, might she not?" [ou "mightn`t she?", ou "couldn't she?"}.

You're right pondedaniel.
I never heard anybody say "mayn't"

I guess "may" is a disappearing word from the English Language and the substitution of the auxilary modals as suggested by Henry Cunha provides common usage.

I would substitute the second example with "could"
e.g. You and me may get 10 on the test, may we not?
You and me could get 10 on the test, couldn`t we?
(or better You and I could get 10 in the test, couldn`t we?)

The construction "could we not" is also not common nowadays and can appear after the original modal
e.g. You and I could, could we not, get 10 in the test.

Olá Tim,
Vc corretamente prefere "could", seguindo o significado da frase.

Sim, o seu uso para dar permissão é pouco usado (You may go. = vc pode ir/ Vá.), mas o uso para indicar possibilidade (That may be true.

Tb acho estranho vc pensar que "could we not" é incomum.

Just some observations... Regards
