By being absent from the trial, he forfeited the right to appeal.

"Forfeit"= perder, abrir mão, render-se

Veja o que dizem os dicionários:

Forfeit
1. It's a verb used to tell someone that s/he loses a right,possession,etc or has it taken away from her/him. Urban Dictionary

2. Something that's taken away from you or something that you've to pay because you've broken a rule or made a mistake. Urban Dictionary

3. Something surrendered or subject to surrender as punishment for a crime, an offense, an error, or a breach of contract. The Free Dictionary

4. To surrender, be deprived of, or give up the right to on account of a crime, an offense, an error, or a breach of contract. - The Free Dictionary

Hi there Jnax!
In that case the opponent disconnected from the game, that is, they quit/leave the game (perhaps for saving face, so they aren´t beaten in the match.)

A gamer in a Forum said, "The obvious solution to this is for COD players to put their egos aside and accept that some people are better than them and they will get beaten now and again, but that's not going to happen.
Other pointed out that in the "League of the Legends (a game) if you leave a match you're put on probation and are only allowed to join back to that same game. If you leave several matches then you're banned for several days."
