In theory - used to say that a particular statement(something that you say or write that gives information or opinion) is supposed to be true but may in fact be wrong:

Example:
In theory, these machines should last for ten years or more.
That sounds fine in theory, but have you really thought it through?

In theory is a synonym that I've found here. I hope it helps. Good luck.

In general: em tese
In principle: em tese

Exemplos de uso:
  • In general, it takes about a month for the shipment to arrive.
  • In principle, making the changes should be a simple matter, but there may be problems we haven't thought of.
  • In principle, it should be possible.
Prefira as opções mostradas anteriormente.

Bons estudos.
