Como dizem "I'm going to take a shower"?

Sra_Tradutora 6 77

I'm going to take a shower.

=

Vou tomar banho.
Vou tomar um banho.
Vou tomar uma ducha. [menos comum para mim]
Vou banhar.

Quanto ao "I'm going to take a shower", fico com "Vou tomar banho".

Yep, Rakell. This thread wouldn´t be complete without this one.

==================

While on the topic to ''chuveirada" we could still say something like "I´m gonna
take a quick shower"/I´m going to take a shower real quick. Since "chuveirada" changes the focus a little bit to the timing.

Example of a sentence:
Is it safe to leave my baby unattended while I take a quick shower?
[ Of course not, unless you leave him in the crib, sleeping and with an eletronic monitor nearby, along with a CCTV. He hee.]

By the way, I had talked about "banho" in Portuguese, it refers to any (or almost) kind of contact with water, sort of.
In English it´s different, taking a shower suggests the use of a "chuveiro" or "ducha" (also translated as "shower") or the bathroom in wich the shower is placed.

To talk about a "banho de rio"/banho de mar, you could say take a "dip" in a river, , in the sense of "dar um mergulho".
To "a banho de rio/de mar" in general, we could say "take a swim in the river/take a bath in the river/swim in the river/bath in the river or sea etc.

Indeed dip and bath, can be used interchangeably almost always, I think.

Hmm, guys wait till you know somebody from PI or MA! it´s odd, I myself got surprised with the non-reflexive use of the verb "banhar" - vou banhar.

I know for a fact some people there do say "vou banhar". In Spanish one can say
"Me voy a bañar." Even so, it sounds less strange.

Anyway, let´s say it was just a passing comment, it´s not the pattern in Portuguese, but it is a two-state local regionalism.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I read somewhere that it's quite common in Brazil to take several showers every day, just for the sake of it (sem motivo algum). I must have some Brazilian blood in me because I love doing that too!

Yes, It's common to take at least 2 showers a day, one in the morning e other at night, but some of us take more than 2, specially in summer.
PPAULO 6 49 1.3k
When you live in the Northeast region in the summer, or even in the Southeast in the summer you can´t do without at least three showers a day. For instance, in Rio last summer (December, 27) we had the hottest day since 1915. In days like these there´s no way of two showers be enough.

The termal sensation was 47°C

Not really, not of public initiative, as a general policy. There is a neighborhood which is very hot, so the mayor installed a suspended pipes with holes in some streets, so there´s a thin mist that act as an air natural coolant.

In other neighbourhoods, there are people that rent their pools to make some extra money. Other way, is to get under a hose or shower at somebody´s backyard.
And drink a lot of water, of course.

Well...don´t they say that necessity is the mother of invention?
Many, many times we can see improvisations in this country, many really works!

This is a guy that propels his boat by means of a trator, crossing the "Sao Francisco River". A guy that lives by a river that cross the "Royal trail" had the same idea. BTW, "a estrada real", a trail that were used in the "Empire" times to get to Minas Gerais. Now a must go to bikers and motorbikers.

And this "barca-ônibus" used to cross the Paraiba river, from Cabedelo city to Lucena district. It is a boat, but with an structrure of bus, the chairs and all that jazz. Except that it doesn´t have a wheel, but a helm.

" Vou me lavar, volto logo"

We say something similar in English (in French and Spanish as well), but it doesn't necessarily mean "to take a shower", which only refers to using the "chuveiro". It could be used for a bath as well, and it's "to wash oneself".

Ex. Just give me a minute. I'm going to wash myself and then we can go out on the town.

Less commonly, there's also "I'm going to take a wash". And in the case of a quick wash of the hands and face at the sink, we say, "I'm going to wash up".

Very interesting the link between "se lavar" and "wash himself/wash up". I had seen that in English many times, but had not the established/made the connection between then yet. Good for translators, I think. ;)

I just found an old recording with Ernie and Bert from Sesame Street, where Ernie goes to "wash himself". Since it was made for a long-playing record (disco de vinil) and not for TV, there is no original video but somebody did something slightly amusing with it here:

Ha ha, agree, it´s amusing and interesting how the guy made the point in a simple way. Thanks for sharing.
PPAULO 6 49 1.3k
Same in Rio (as I had said in passing, before) and in SP (as Flavia had pointed out).
In Northeast is understood if one says so (the "ducha thing"), but I wouldn´t say it is widespread "tomar banho" is more usual. Tough, once in a while it may be used.

;)

Vou tomar banho.
ou
Estou indo tomar banho.

It´s used in the North region, mainly Piaui and Maranhao state. Even "G1", which is one arm of Globo communication conglomerate (so, mainstream media in Brazil) respect that ''brand'' of Portuguese (when communicating to and with them, obviously.)

As I have many friends of the region, here my contribution to let you know the Portuguese of Piaui.
Well, since the state economy is gathering pace (now there are many immigrants, that came from Rio Grande do Sul into the soy agriculture) I find it noteworthy the language note.

Brazil is a large country indeed, and language has its regional peculiarities. Enjoy it. ;)

Of course, they will understand, use, and respect the way we speak in other regions as well. I mean, they understand the "tomar banho". Theirs, is a regionalism and they know that. Me too. ;)
Sometimes I say: "Vou jogar uma água no corpo". This means, I will take a shower quickly.
