Em uma resposta do tipo "I don't know when the meeting is", a primeira forma está errada?

A segunda forma está correta.
When you are asking for "when, who, what, which" it is not necessary using the auxiliary verb do/did because the subject is the own "When, who, what, which".
Similarly when you have a sentence with verb to be/will and is not necessary change the words sequence.
