Qual a diferença entre "city prefix" e "area code"?

Se você está falando de telefonia, "city prefix" e "area code" são a mesma coisa, ou seja, indicam o mesmo tipo de serviço de telefonia

Por curiosidade, para se fazer uma ligação internacional deve-se seguir os seguintes passos:
00 (indica ligação internacional) + código da operadora (Embratel, p.e.) + código do país (EUA: 1) + código de área/prefixo da cidade(p.e. Los Angeles: 213) + telefone destino

In the first example, you can see that when there´s an overlay, one has to press the number of his/her area code. The telephone being of 7 digits in other area cities, in the ones with overlaying one has to use 10 digits (even if he calls to his neighbour).


Within the same area code it may have different prefixes, let´s make one analogy with the Brazilian phones, if one has a cellphone using a different carrier from other people, the first four or five numbers will be different, even if they are in the same city.
