I was afraid my luggage went missing at the airport
Tive medo de que extraviassem minha mala
tive medo que minha mala fosse extraviada
What if I replaced "miss" for "lose" in these cases above?

Native speakers of English would not understand you if you did it.
You'll never hear them say, "my luggage went losing", "... turned up losing" etc., the idiomatic "missing" prevailing in this case. NSE's learn to employ "missing" since their childhood, their parents taking turns at teaching them that's the way they say it.

I was worried about losing my suitcase/hand luggage/bag (for hand luggage)... etc...at the airport.
I was afraid that the airline would lose my baggage/cabin bag (...etc) on the flight/at the airport.
I was afraid that my bag took on a life on its own and decided to flight to a different destination, or give up on me entirely/ go separate ways!
