Complex grammar structure Brazilians have trouble with

jlcashill 4 12 30
Here’s a more complex grammatical structure that many Brazilians have difficulty with. It's really common in both spoken and written English. See if you can select the correct answers, and then let us know what actually happens, how it compares to the same structures in Portuguese and why the mistake is made, and maybe give some other examples! Also, do you have any idea how you might be able to learn the grammar rule and apply it when you speak? I’d be really interested to know!

Choose the correct sentences:
1.
a) Excuse me. Could you tell me when the flight is expected to leave?
b) Excuse me. Could you tell me when is the flight expected to leave?

2.
a) Do they know where did he go?
b) Do they know where he went?

3.
a) I’m not sure who called. He didn’t leave a message.
b) I’m not sure who did call. He didn’t leave a message.

a) Do you have any idea what time it is?
b) Do you have any idea what time is it?

4.
a) I wish she’d told me when they are arriving.
b) I wish she’d told me when are they arriving.

5.
a) Did you see what he bought? He got the new iPhone 6!
b) Did you see what did he buy? He got the new iPhone 6!

I'll give you the answers if there is enough interest in this post! Good luck!

I really loved your post
Let me see:

1. A 2. B 3. A e 3." A 4. A 5. A
I don't know how to explain but I think we cannot use two structures, I mean two auxiliaries in the same sentence, with the same function. A little bit confusing?

In the sentence " Do you know what time it is?" Although "to be" is in the sentence "do" is the auxiliary,
If I answer that: Yes, I do or No, I don't.

Let me know If I am wrong. Ok!

Vou tentar responder, me corrijam se possível.

Oi, actually as respostas corretas são aquelas descritas nos posts acima, veja as sugestões que seguem:

1.a) Excuse me. Could you tell me when the flight is expected to leave? Correct

2.b) Do they know where he went? Correct

3.a) I’m not sure who called. He didn’t leave a message.b) Do you have any idea what time is it? What time it is.* Não se pode usar o do junto com o to be sendo ambos auxiliares no mesmo trecho da frase. Aliás não se pode misturar auxiliares em geral, a não ser que usemos uma composição de auxiliares, isto é, mais de um (só que em conjunto) como no exemplo: It must've been love (It must have been love).

4.a) I wish she’d told me when are they arriving. Incorrect pelo mesmo sentido da 3.

5.a) Did you see what he bought? He got the new iPhone 6!. Correct

Right!
