Loft - the space under the roof of a house or other building

Basement - part of a building that is under the level of the ground

To begin with:

loft -sotão.

Per Aulete definition:
Pavimento oculto, ordinariamente sem janelas, construído na parte superior de um andar, ou só de uma parte dele, destinado geralmente a armazenar objetos de pouco uso.


Basement: porão.
Bras. Parte de uma casa ou de um edifício que fica abaixo do andar térreo, e é normalmente us. como depósito, mas que, dependendo do tamanho, pode tb. ser habitada.

In America you can find many "basement apartments" for rent.


I saw (Googling) "loft apartments" (looks like in London they are lofts (sótãos) made into apartments, seems like the equivalent to "lajes" or some "sobrados" in Rio.

There are also lofts that were meant to industry, roomful spaces made into property rentals, for studio apartments etc.
