Up to x until (até): Como utilizar

I'll still have to work there up to the end of the year.

Yep, you could.
In this case "until" would mean "up to the end of the year" (up to the time/up to a given time), so not a specific schedule.
That is, you talk about the end of the year in a general way, not December, 31 or something like that (for example "by December" of this year would require "by"). Even if "this year" is implicit as in:
Niti Aayog plans to ready 15-Year Vision by December. (implicit "that is in this year" -a scheduled event)

You couldn´t if it was a specific schedule

Up to
Up until
Until

Up to now, I have lived alone (até agora, vivi sozinho)
You stay on the bus up 'till the city of curitiba (fique no ônibus até a cidade de curitiba)
You must press and hold the button until it's green (você tem que apertar e segurar o botão, até que fique verde)

Hope I helped.
