Eu acho que "wild" está se referindo não somente a "lights", mas também a "shadows".

Some bad translations I have made, if I can´t get there, at least I get close and half cigar - intead of "close but no cigar, hee hee:
Então saímos pelas ruas e andamos por horas entre as luzes e sombras frenéticas (e brilhantes) da cidade lotada [de gente]."
Então saímos pelas ruas e andamos por horas entre o show/um espetáculo de luzes e sombras frenéticas da brilhantes) da cidade que estava sempre cheia de gente.
Wild, to me, doesn´t have that sense of "selvagem/não civilizado/não domesticado", etc. It would be more on the "electric/exciting/variegated/thrilling/impressive" and so on.
In those days, the streets with such "show of lights" were eye-candy to book writers (pleasing to the senses). Comtemporarily we can see the the "wild" in the wild light shows. Perhaps we are less impressionable these days...
