You can also use "drop out" in the sense of backing out of a prior engagement.

We had two bands lined up to play at the festival, but one of them dropped out last minute.

Side note: English is known to rely heavily on verbs when describing manner of motion and on particles when describing path of motion (or the intended result of an action, in figurative constructions). This means speakers can often give varying shades of meaning to a number of phrasal verbs by maintaing the original particle and changing their verbal unit. In the case at hand, similar expressions would include back out, skip out, bail out, wriggle out, flake out etc. The latter comes from the idea of a flake — a forgetful or unreliable person who often fails to follow through on agreements. Similarly, to "wriggle out" of a commitment is to avoid a commitment by attempting to find a way out of it. The metaphorical image could be that of a person who wriggles (performs a twisting motion) out of a tight-fitting piece of clothing in order to remove it. Bailing out on someone or out of a prior arrangement is analagous to the notion of abandoning a damaged airplane in mid-air (bailing out of an airplane).

Hi Donay!
Não poderia usar o termo "jump out of"? Eu sei que para "pular de uma janela" ele é utilizado, só não sei de outros usos de jump out.

Jlmello,

Em um sentido literal, você pode sim usar "jump out of". Porém, no sentido figurado - desistir, cair fora - não recomendo o uso de "jump out of".

Pessoal

Usa-se muito "pular fora do barco" em situações onde a gente prevê que algo tá pra acontecer e a gente "pula fora" antes que se dê mal. In English: jump ship

jump ship
1. Lit. to leave one's job on a ship and fail to be aboard it when it sails; [for a sailor] to go AWOL. One of the deckhands jumped ship at the last port.
2. Fig. to leave any post or position; to quit or resign, especially when there is difficulty with the job. None of the editors liked the new policies, so they all jumped ship as soon as other jobs opened up.
