Você usa "was" somente para I, He, She e IT; nas demais você usa "were"
I Was
You Were
He/She/It Was
You Were
We Were
They Were

If he were an expert he would know that. Present subjunctive always use "were" and always start with "IF". I guess you can understand better watching this video I send you a link:
