When can I use the verb HAVE as auxiliary verb ?

Mensagempor rohnner em Terça Out 23, 2007 3:11 pm

Hi !!

I was talking (in english) with a friend today (or trying to talk.. hehe), and suddenly appeared a question.

When can we use the verb HAVE as auxiliary verb in a interrogative sentence ?? I tried to find an answer on google, but I didn't find any convincing answer.

I saw some sentences, for example, "Do you have any...", but I saw also some sentences when the verb HAVE is used as auxiliary to ask a question.

Please, could anyone help ?? When can I use HAVE as auxiliary verb in a interrogative sentence ??

Thank you very much !!!

(I'm sorry if I writed many wrong words, but i'm trying to get better... hehe).

Well, when you do a past participle construction, you would use the verb to have.- Have you gone to the store yet?

O have é usado como auxiliar com os perfect tenses (tempos verbais que são formados pelo have + particípio passado do verbo principal).

Por exemplo:

Present Perfect -> presente do verbo have + particípio passado do verbo principal (I have worked, he has seen, they have come.)

Quando o verbo HAVE tem o sentido de ter, indicando posse, usa-se o auxiliar DO (e suas derivações) nas perguntas e negativas.

Do you have a car?
Did
she go to work by car?

Existe também a construção have got com o sentido de ter. É uma expressão informal e mais usada no inglês britânico (mas também usada no inglês americano).

I have got three books. --> I have three books.
Have you got a pencil to lend me? --> Do you have a pencil to lend me?

Well, hope that helped!
