Begin x Start: Qual a Diferença?

Begin x Start: Qual a Diferença?
Estou com uma dúvida que surgiu ouvindo uma música onde em uma parte da letra se fala: "The test begins now..."

Então me perguntei se "The test STARTS now..." estaria correto? A princípio pode parecer simples mas havendo duas palavras com o mesmo (ou quase o mesmo) significado fiquei curioso em saber as regras para se utilizar as mesmas.

Um abraço a todos,

Gyowanny,

Recentemente a mesma pergunta foi feita no site da BBC. Veja só a resposta dada por um especialista em Linguistica Aplicada:

1: Could you please teach me the difference of 'begin' and 'start'? I looked up the dictionary but they seem to have the same meanings. I would like to ask if these words have the formal or informal meanings.

Another difficult one! I think there is only a slight difference, which is that if you begin doing something it can suggest that the same thing happens quite often. E.g. I begin writing my blogs at 7pm every day. On the other hand, ‘start’ is more often used the first ever time you do something. For example, ‘I started playing piano when I was 6’. Oooh it’s a very small difference and I think you can use them fairly interchangeably. Do our readers have any other ideas?

I hope that helps!
Como ficaria então:

Let's start the class... ou Let's begin the class ??

Obrigada!

Ambos estão corretos.
Pelo que eu entendi da explicação do Alessandro, o "begin" é utilizado para dizer sobre algo que é feito com maior frequência e "start" é utilizado para dizer sobre desde quando algo foi começado pela primeira vez. Am I right?
Nesse caso sim Laís, mas o begin costuma ser mais formal, inclusive no dicionário Cambridge explica outros casos de quando utilizar um ou outro.

Begin or start?
De English Grammar Today
We can use the verbs begin and start to mean the same thing but begin is more formal than start. Begin is an irregular verb. Its past simple form is began and its -ed form is begun:

When did you begin learning English?

The meeting didn’t start until 9 pm.

We use start, but not begin, to talk about machines:

Press this button to start the printer.

Not: …to begin the printer.

The lawnmower won’t start. (this means that it doesn’t work)

Not: The lawnmower won’t begin.

Start, but not begin, is used to talk about creating a new business:

She started a new restaurant and it’s been going really well.

Not: She began a new restaurant …

Oi Fábio, poderia traduzir tudo o que escreveu pra melhor entendimento?
Tradução de meu post anterior:

‘Begin’ ou ‘start’?
De English Grammar Today
Podemos usar os verbos ‘begin’ e ‘start’ para significar a mesma coisa, mas ‘begin’ é mais formal do que ‘start’. ‘Begin’ é um verbo irregular. Sua forma do passado simples é ‘began’ e sua forma –ed(past participle) é ‘begun’:

Begin: Quando você começou a aprender inglês?

Start: A reunião não começou até às 21:00.

Nós usamos ‘start’, e não ‘begin’, para falar sobre máquinas:

Start: Pressione este botão para ligar a impressora.

Não diga: …to begin the printer.(ligar a impressora.)

Start: O cortador de grama não liga.(isto significa que ele não funciona)

Não diga: The lawnmower won’t begin.(O cortador de grama não liga.)

‘Start’, e não ‘begin’, é usado para falar
Sobre criar um novo negócio:

Start: Ela abriu um novo restaurante e está indo realmente bem.

Não diga: She began a new restaurant ... (Ela abriu um novo restaurante ...)

Espero que assim fique mais claro, algumas partes achei melhor não traduzir para um melhor entendimento, e só lembrando que se notar qualquer erro na tradução é só dizer.
