(pejorative) If you describe someone as a string-puller, you mean they use their influence with other people to get things done, often unfairly...

There's a well-known word for this kind of preferential treatment: nepotism. It can be applied to business or political settings. The connotation is inevitably negative.

In politics, we speak also of political affiliates, but the connotation can range from positive to negative.

Absolutely! These are excellent expressions.

I'd forgotten about cronies. It doesn't have to have a negative meaning, but in politics often does.
