Uma bem simples e expressiva: "He really did it in the public competition."
Uma possivel tradução, emprestando do vocabulário do hockey, seria
"That fellow scored a big hit qualifying in the public competition." OR
Do mundo do entretenimento: ("the show was a hit.")
"He was a hit in qualifying..."
Um feito é tb "a feat":
"It was quite a feat by that guy to make it through in the public competition."
Mais uma que me vem em mente é "to put it all together." Existem muitas, e certamente alguem vai sugerir algo até melhor.
Realmente tenho mais problemas com "concurso," e o fato de que não é questão de "ganhar," mas de "se qualificar."
