I would say too: I have got a cur or a stray dog.
(U.S. slang) I have got a yellow dog or a pooch.

Mongrel and mutt are commonly used words. Both refer more to a dog of undefined race than they do to the fact the dog is in the streets without an owner. Cur is a formal and rarely used word for mongrel. A problem with stray dog is that, if you have one, he is no longer a stray. (A stray dog is an animal without a known owner.) Pooch is an affectionate way to say dog. It has nothing to do with being a vira-latas, being a mongrel, not having an owner, etc.. I have not heard an animal called a yellow dog except for a dog that happened to be yellow. Tim has already addressed under dog.

Yellow dog
"Etymology
Carolina dogs were called yellow dogs because many had yellow coats [It stands to reason!]. The fact that many mongrel dogs also had yellow coats lead to the term's application to any worthless item or person"

"Mutt" is so often used affectionately, that "lovable mutt" has become a cliche. (wordreference - usa)

A: Lovely dog ... What breed is he? [Lindo cachorro...Qual é a raça?]
B: He's mixed. [Ele é vira-lata.]
B: He's a mix. [Ele é vira-lata.]

Bons estudos.

Sorry I did not mean to give votes. I mean to write messages. I would not say, I have got a... I would say ,"I have a mixed breed." No one who loves his dog would call them a mongrel.l. If you were in the street and a group of wild dogs surrounded you, you might tell someone you were surrounded by a group of mongrels. Slumdog is a term I have only heard in the movie and may mean a person who is from the slum or a wild dog. I don't know. As someone said, underdog has nothing to do with a dog. The underdog is used for a person who is not expected to win a competition of some sort. Kudos to the humor of summa this summa that!
