Breezeblock house

Outside a row of breezeblock houses along a dirt road in Bom Jardim, one of the most violent favelas in Fortaleza, social worker Silvana Severo rips open the parcel of flour, beans and other food that she is bringing to a family. "We do that to stop them selling on the food for drugs," she says. The Guardian

I don't think I've ever heard "breeze-block" in North America. I think our current use tends to be "concrete block" house, and generally only for the foundation, with clay bricks for the structure over the foundation. Actually, at least in Canada, the popular brick exterior in our modern houses is cosmetic (a façade) and not structural. The real structure is wood, a material more suitable to insulate against the heat of summer and cold of winter. But older homes were real brick homes. But heating fuel (or coal) was cheaper then.

I know absolutely nothing about this stuff, but according to this Wikipedia entry, the "bloco de cimento" used for these houses is called "cinder block" in North America and New Zealand, "breeze block" in the UK, "hollow block" in the Philippines, and "besser block" or "brick" in Australia.

I ran a Google search and the first hits for "cinder block house" came up with this.

It fits with some Fortaleza, Natal, and residences of other cities in the region.
As the reporter of The Guardian is of the UK, the term was used (since they use it there, as Tradutora pointed out.)

indeed such houses can be exactly like that, since the breeze is welcome, a tree nearby as well...or the poor dog is going to
pass most of time breathing through his tongue, the equivalent to a human being sweating!

Hmm, now suddenly I missed Fortaleza! 8-)

See here for the difference between cinder blocks and concrete blocks.

These blocks have hollow cells, but they are not for ventilation. The cells decrease the weight and allow stronger bonding (with more cement) between blocks. I really doubt if cinder blocks are much in use any more, at least around these parts.

Concrete block houses/cinder block houses give similar pictures.
In fact, it seems that to the builder it makes a difference, but maybe not the one seeing from outside. Visually speaking, of course.
In Ceará, I think both are used these days.
Anyway it´s good to know that ones made of cinder/ash etc are less resistent. Thanks for sharing.

If cinder blocks were not used, then the Guardian reporter should have used the term "concrete block" rather than "breezeblock".

In fact, the blocks "are made with open cells" what makes the difference is the material they are made of.
Just a detail, tough.
Also, chances are that they call it breezeblock for the fact that the brick itself is bought unfilled/hollow, so the "breezeblock" could be just out of habit. It´s a conjecture of mine, tough. :!:

Concrete Blocks

Concrete blocks are made of pure concrete. That is, the aggregates used are finely crushed stone or sand.

Cinder Blocks

Cinder blocks are also made from concrete, but the aggregate includes either coal cinders or ash. Consequently, cinder blocks are much lighter than concrete blocks.

Strength

Concrete and cinder blocks are made with open cells that can accept metal reinforcing or additional concrete for greater strength. Concrete blocks are far stronger than cinder blocks. Some building codes expressly prohibit the use of cinder blocks in construction projects
