Barber's guinea pig

First, the more tenured/experienced barbers do not automatically send you to "the new" barber for you to be that new barber's guinea pig.

Cya!
Thanks in advance.

Guinea pig
Someone or something used as the subject of an experiment.
E.g.
Jane used her husband as a guinea pig to try her new baked chicken recipe.
This is the first time I've cooked this dish so you are my guinea pigs.

They also have a metaphorical way of speaking, so they avoid the "guinea pig" expression. So, in the pharmaceutical industry parlance, they often express that with the word "volunteer". Perhaps because studies with guinea pigs where sometimes to find how animals (not only guinea pigs themselves but guinea pig took that meaning of "cobaia") would catch a disease and howt they would be fare with drugs to heal them. In other words, they were disposable, sort of.
Volunteers are supposed to be in more safe trials of a new drug/medicine, those phases sometimes from I to IV.
Of course it´s not a banned expression, just a choice of words. The newspapers and sites broadly it in their stories, sometimes with a negative/critical streak to it in some cases.

In a sentence:
Brazilian volunteers join British Covid-19 vaccine trials.

Volunteers would be used as guinea pigs in a vaccine trial designed to infect volunteers with coronavirus. (may or may not be negative edge to it. Also the bit "infect volunteers with..." could suggest criticism).
