But there is a difference. You can compare apples to oranges to say that they are, or are not, the same. But if you liken apples to oranges you are saying that they are alike.

A comparison may result in a conclusion that the items are, or aren't, similar.
A likening is restricted to comparisons that conclude the items are similar.
A differentiation is restricted to comparisons that show the items are dissimilar.

These are the roots:
Alike=similar=likening
Different=dissimilar=differencing
