More on that. Dar a(s) mão(s) à palmatória = dar a mão ao bolo.

My copy of A Dictionary of Informal Brazilian Portuguese says, "To admit the error of one's ways, confess one's faults, acknowledge one's mistakes."

My copy of Houaiss Dictionary on CD says, "reconhecer ter sido vencido ou estar enganado" (to acknowledge defeat or acknowledge having given incorrect, untrue, or misleading information to [somebody])

My copy of Webster's Third New International Dictionary on CD says, "acknowledge the corn : to admit or confess a charge, fault, error, or failure" <when his error was proved he had to acknowledge the corn>

There's an expression in English, "to have your wrists slapped," but its meanings don't coincide with Portuguese.

In fact, it's used in two opposite ways. One is to mean you're punished too lightly for a serious wrong:

Three months in jail for vehicular homicide is like having your wrists slapped and being told not to do it again.

The other is to mean you are punished unfairly:

You've been treated badly, but if you say anything you'll have your wrists slapped.

In both languages the expression no doubt has its roots in corporal punishment, but seem to be used to different ends.
