In Rio, people say "deixar uma avenida." when an attacker is left with plenty of room to get to the adversary´s goalpost, that is, he can go and play freely and perhaps even score a goal. Other way in Rio is to say that the adversary "deixou uma Avenida Brazil." LOL. "Deixar uma avenida nas costas" is a novelty to me, but makes all sense, of course.
