You can also use "long" as adjective here the same way as lengthy and it's the one which is more commonly used by native speakers in this context.

It's a long process. (É um processo demorado)
The movie was very long. (O filme foi muito demorado)

"Lengthy" fits better with movie than with process, but I'd still suggest "long" because it's just more natural and commonly used. As for "process", long is definitely the better option. Not only in terms of it fitting better with the word process itself but "long process" is just sort of a fixed/set term/expression whereas "lengthy process" is nowhere near as commonly used.

lengthy
[adjective]
>> demorado(-a)

When some things just go on and on, we often use the adjective lengthy as a negative connotation implying tediousness or excess.

1) You can't do it overnight. It is a lengthy process. It is not easy to become a professional = You can't do it overnight. This process takes a long time. It is not easy to become a professional.
>> Não dá para fazer da noite para o dia. É um processo demorado. Se profissionalizar não é fácil = Não dá para fazer da noite para o dia. É um processo que leva muito tempo. Não é fácil se tornar um profissional.

2) The movie was lengthy = The movie took too long.
>> O filme foi (muito) demorado = O filme demorou muito.

Yes, sometimes "it's a thing/it's something that takes a long time". Of course, we are talking here about the duration of the process or event, there's no inner interpretation or judgment. Indeed something that is taking longer than expected.

To show impatience or that it's something undesirable we could state that "it takes too long", usually we use an ING form:
"The vaccine process/distribution is taking too long to roll out..."
"The train took too long to pass."
